Question about grading IHC (now with pics)

I have a bright red 1906 IHC that looks to be in perfect condition - I can find no hits, marks, or hairline scratches. It has full luster.

Only thing is it has a small black spot at about 2:00 at the rim. Assuming this coin is about MS-67, how much would that detract from the grade?

I'd take a pic, but I'll have to borrow my mom's camera, as mine is broken.

It's original color, Russ. Maybe I shouldn't have said bright red.........it's same red as the other copper coins I have that are graded RD by PCGS.

  • Sounds like there might be some parrot poo on it. A carbon spot will take away from the grade 0 to 1 point depending on the location and the size of the spot.

Cheryl, you are asking am impossible question. So many non-slabbed IHC's have been messed with, recolored, wiped etc, even graders have a hard time with IHC's. Depending on the color it could go red, red brown, then there is the issue of the strike and lustre. If it has a severe carbon spot they might not even grade it because of their guarantee. As if often said image this thread is worthless without pics. As long as I have studied them I still miss the grade more than half the time.

It's right on the rim about 2:00.

really, your pictures are terrible and it's hard to make out A black spot.

if you think you might have something there and would like to make sure, I'd bet you could send it to someone on here with a few bux for return postage, and let them take a peek at it for you.
