what are old 2x2s made of?

I have a lot of 2x2s from my younger days (the early 70s). Some are the staple kind and some the self adhesive style. Are these old ones made of pvc or some other dangerous material? If so, I will change out to some new ones. And, if I need to change them, is there anything I need to do to remove any "residue" from the pvc or any other harmful material? These coins are not worth much, as I was only about 10 years old then, but they hold fond memories, and who would want to harm any coin?

Thanks for all your advice that you continue to give,
Charlie

I have never had any trouble with the old cardboard 2x2's. The old PVC vinyl flips are what should be avoided.

Most cardboard fold type coin holders have a mylar window which are safe. Make sure you blow or wipe the dust off since the manufacturing process involves cutting cardboard which generates cardboard dust which can cause future spotting on your coins. PVC products usually have a distictive smell like a new shower curtain. PVC holders are dangerous to your coin's health and should be avoided.

The self-adhesive 2x2s might also cause damage to coins due to close proximity to the glue that holds them together (plus, some of these have PVC windows as well, including those produced by Hartberger); I'd avoid them altogether. But I've had no problems with mylar-lined 2x2s even in extremely adverse conditions, so they're harmless. For questionable coins, give them a quick acetone bath (do a search for more info) to safely remove PVC contamination.

If it was me, with the very low cost of new 2x2's and not knowing for sure what the windows in thirty year old 2x2's are made of, I'd switch them out to be on the safe side.image

    That is a good idea.

I agree for the price of the 2x2's today, play it safe, buy a few hundred and change out the stuff you have. I have been putting coins in 2x2's for about 30 years of so and the only problem I ever had was when I was a little stupider I'd handle the 2x2's with hands full of hand cream and leave a residue on the inside. Nice descolorazations to some of the coins.
