Coin Identification

Hey I have a coin or medal I am unable to find in the redbook. I could really use your help in identification

It is a copper coin that is of Abe Lincoln, on the front top reads "16th President of the United States" directly below reads "1861 to 1865" on the bottom it reads "Abraham Lincoln" it has a picture of Abe in the Center.

The Rear of the coin reads "Honest Old Abe" near the top followed by a sentence taking up the middle
"The most revered American, Served as President throughout the Great Civil War, Noted for his immortal Gettysburg address"

Surrounding the bottom it reads on the back "The Great Emancipator"

The coin is about the size of a quarter.

Anyone know what this coin/medal is?

You got me, no idea. Have any photos?
  • Definately not a governmental issue. This sounds very similar to a series of Presidientail tokens issued as premiums from Shell gas stations around the time of the Bicentennial. I have seen'em from earlier time periods. It was originally a 'give-away' token. Its present 'value' is nominal at best; however, you never know, there may be someone who would trade their first-born for it...

Some where in my keg'o'stuff, I have one, too.

Has a somewhat modern look to me. 1960's?

Perhaps a 1961 or 1965 privately minted commemorative of some sort?

I agree. Probably a 1965 gas station token and a complete ripoff of VDB's Lincoln.

Russ is right- these were put out by the Shell Oil Company, in the late 1950's and/or early 1960's, I believe.

I have actually found three or four of them with my metal detector over the years. Appropriately, the first one I got was Washington.

Hold your Plaid stamps...Shell did have a Presidential "coin" series that was struck in bronze and not copper. Aluminum was the give away metal piece when you gassed up.. The winning prize sets were done in bronze. There was also a complete 50 States of the Union set of prize pieces . The medal of cerick 01 is unknown to me as a Shell piece. I was a Shell dealer for 35 years during the period of the give aways.
