  • Boy I would like to thank all you all for the help you have given. You put alot of hard work into those answers. And to think you didnt trust the link?!? I just wanted to know what was up with this coin and its edge, and if it could be silver.

Well I can now see that I am not the same kind of collector as the rest of you. You people are so worried about your values and your grades that you really take the fun out of it.

  • You would think a 76-D would have the "clad sandwich" look, but that looks like a 40% er, as you state. However, the BU 1976 40%ers were all "S" mints.

Cladking might be of help here -- "page" him in your thread title as well.

  • Where is the sandwich look on the edge of this coin? This is pretty interesting. If this turns out to be a lowly 76-D that somehow wound up on a silver planchet you guys probably won't be so cavalier about it. image

  • ttt for Cladking --

Cladking, do you (or anyone else) know why a 76-D Kennedy would not show the "clad sandwich" on the edge?
  • ttt -- once more for cladking.

<< <i>That is a very good find you have! Its not an error of any kind, they made Silver Clad Bicentennials! .800 silver outer layer .200 Copper bonded to a inner core of .209 silver! Total Silver .14792 OZ (Pure.) Mostly S Proof coins. Many of these were melted in 1982! Total Value is $3.00-$5.00

However yours is a D mintmark so that is a little strange! >>

It's always interesting when the clueless answer a question. If it is a D mint struck on a silver planchet, (which is a possibility), it would be worth huge money, not $3 to $5.

    Lucy,

That's a very mean thing to say, and my feelings are hurt.

The color does seem off for a clad coin. I would weigh it very carefully. If it is an off-metal coin, it would be worth considerably more than even $100.00.

Russ, how do you think that would have happened? I would think it is unlikely that a 40% silver planchet made its way to Denver -- perhaps a Denver business strike die got mixed in with the San Frans?

It's possible that a planchet shipment got routed to the wrong mint. The chance is very slim, but just maybe. Production during the bi-centenniel was pretty hectic and chaotic. Of course, it's also possible the coin is plated. Many of them were as souvenirs, but usually they were done in gold.

Wouldn't they roll the metal right at the mint (Denver)? Perhaps a 40% strip slipped in there, but I would think that would be noticed.

I guess the OP would have to weigh it to tell for sure if it is 40%. However, I guess he got his feelings hurt by the joking!
