3 coin robberies surrounding FUN show
3 coin robberies tallied so far concerning people coming or going
from the FUN show. This is the worse I can remember in quite
awhile. Be cautious and never take security for granted.

Even as a collector who would not have a significant # of coins on me, I am always very nervous about carrying coins into an out of coin shows.
I always try to park close in well lighted areas, not carry briefcases or stock boxes and move quickly.
I do not stop my car to do other errands.
I rarely enter or leave with a companion but it is a good idea.
Obviously the risk for dealers is a whole other level of concern.
<< <i>
Edited to add: and don't look like a target. In other words, don't carry stuff that clearly evidences you may be carrying coins (e.g. a show badge, program, auction catalog, etc.)

Seems as though the first theft was from a dealer who left his inventory in the car while he went into a resturant near the convention center to eat. Rumor is the loss is about $100k. The dealer? Alan Hager.

No! Really? Words can not express my feelings, were this true...
<< <i>Are there any details ?? >>
Briefly: 100K in coins taken from car while owner was at restaurant.
2nd - Unknown amount of coins taken while owner was sitting
in car while wife went into restaurant for food. Smashed the
windows of car while owner was inside.
3rd - 3 sets of hobo nickels taken from car near Kissimmee, Fla.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
<< <i>The question when it comes to stuff like coins is, how can you tell if it was robbery or insurance fraud ? >>
Agreed...I can't imagine someone really leaving 100k in coins in there car.
I'll say it - If true, there is justice in this world. Also, if true, I wonder if the $100K value is based on the PCGS price guide?
One more thing - are the rumors true that K6AZ was spotted in FL this week?
If it was insurance fraud, the joke is on the dealer. Insurers do not pay on property left in an unattended vehicle.
Sadly, I know of another case from FUN 2003 when considerably more than $100,000 in coins was left unattended in a car and stolen.

Would they need an 18 wheeler to steal $100K worth of ACG coins?

unless the laws have changed recently, insurers will indeed pay on valuables left in a vehicle. i once had clothing and tools stolen from my car after i had a flat and the spare was also flat which required a short walk. the only thing which prevented a 100% coverage was that they were work tools and i didn't have the rider. past that i was reimbursed by State Farm for the total amount allowed by my policy.
I don't wish this on ANYONE. But if it HAS to happen to someone...
1. Pack up coins
2. Head to Florida (80% humidity and 80 degree temps)
3. Park car in Restaurant parking lot (heat goes up inside car) with coins inside, of course !
4. Coins get toned and stolen in the same time frame.
5. Coins show up on Heritage Auction at ten times actual value because of SUPER RAINBOW TONING.
uh huh

SO well, I sure read about a lot of breaking and entering now days.
In Michigan, it has reached epidemic proportions. Dumb drugged addicted white kids from up north.
In NH, banks are getting robbed, several in a week. SO bad, they
rent cops to sit at the front door.
Sign of the times, uneducated slobs running around our country,
broke, and drug addicted looking for their next score.
This first story is true (regarding Hager). Coin dealer insurance does NOT cover unattended valuables.
The second story is true also. Two ski-masked robbers (armed) robbed a dealer at a restaurant. A bum sleeping in a nearby alley got up and chased the ARMED robbers and was able to recover one of the bags. Kudos to him for his bravery.
The third story is also true.

No ACG coins......no proof.
Just think of the publicity: 1 out of 3 coin thieves targets ACG coins.
I doubt none of the other TPG's could say that.

<< <i>Tom, I thought I read in CW that motions were still being tossed around by the majors in the case. I know a number of the dealers got released from the lawsuit. Maybe someone else can refresh this.

I was released from it. I was surprised to be "in" it. And I thought the rest of it was dropped.

My icon IS my coin. It is a gem 1949 FBL Franklin.
It's scary to leave these shows and wonder if you may be tracked down and robbed by gunpoint......trust me if they want the coins and you stop they will do whatever needs to be done to obtain that objective.

I agree...never take security for granted....even if it takes away a few perceived "freedoms", right Michigan????
I feel bad for the ones who got robbed (well, if the rumor is true, less bad feelings for one of them).....were they new dealers/collectors?
I would hope that dealers have learned to be careful and that collectors learn as well.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Actually, it depends on what the policy says. Mine does cover unattended losses.
WH
of too much crime?
It seems that the crime has followed the dealers to the Orlando
location.
I don't think you can really move a show away from something
like this happening.

I don't disagree. No one wants anyone to get robbed.
However, if a robbery is going to take place anyway, better him than anyone else in the business.
geez thats a lot of weight in acg coins....how many bags is that???

Maybe they were all MS70's and priced using the PCGS price guide.

Well, how would one take this??? Some of you are joking about the robberies. Someday one of you carrying one of those "obvious" coin briefcases will have a shotgun in your face. Maybe a collector that doesnt like YOU will get a chance to laugh back.
If I was a professional crook, I would target these large coin shows and go after these briefcases. It is so simple: Stealing coins is like stealing cash - no security cameras or police around - and the score could be HUGE.
With the exposure of gold and other commodities rising, and the press writing about the value of coins - "professional" thieves will soon figure out that taking "coin briefcases" is 10 times simpler than robbing a jewelry store, or trafficking drugs.
These robberies are going to accelerate. Save your puns, joking, sarcasm and laughing. Plenty of masked patrons will be doing it for you.
