Anyone Here Collect Platinum Proof Eagles?

American Platinum Proof Eagle Mintages for 2001 - 2005

...................1 oz..........1/2 oz.........1/4 oz.........1/10 oz

2001..........8962.........8246...........8839...........12,100

2002..........9946.........8810...........9299...........12,392

2003..........8136.........6944...........6811............9218

2004..........5833.........4886...........5035............6846

*2005.........6550..........5276..........5326............7317

*all 2005 Coins
still available from the US Mint - 1 oz only available in 4-coin set

Looks like the 2004's will be the keys to the series. Will the 2005's sell for any premium above what the 2003's sell for? How high will the 2005 mintages go? Any bets on the 2006 mintages?

I've heard tell that these are a convenient form for users to obtain platinum so in
addition to the tiny mintages there might be a large attrition.

But, it's all modern crap if it was made after 1964.

Sort of, if you count one 2004 and one 2005 half oz as a collection.

If you're gonna have just a few then the 2004 Coins are the ones to have. image

If "0" qualifies as a collection, then yes, I collect platinum Eagles.

Why 2004's are bringing stupid money and the 2005 with just a few more can be had as cheap as any right now.....

Every year since they started, I've gotten a 1/10 ounce proof and mint state.

Also have a 1 ounce 2000 mint state. I thought, being the millenium, that it might make it special. Oh well, I still have an ounce of platinum bullion.

If you ever talk coins with a non-collector, they always seem to me to be most surprised that we even have a platinum coin. They know clad, silver, gold, even classic and new commems.

    Not platinum though.

Given that the Royal Canadian Mint has started producing Palladium Maple Leafs, how far away can Paladium Eagles be? That one will be the ultimate mystery Coin.

FullStrike: You should speak with MrPlatinum about platinum eagles.

  • FullStrike,

I collect them, but only in the $100 denomination. At this time, I am focused on the $100 MS Plats. IMHO, I am starting to believe finding a PCGS MS70 $100 Plat in the years 1997,1999,2000 or 2001 might be the hardest "coin" to find post 1996. Anyone find one give me a call.

2004 the best to buy? It'll be a cold day in he!! before I'd pay these prices for a coin that has a few hundred less than the 05.

    2004 Platinum Proof

Most are hitting at least $300 and I really can't figure out why.....just like the 2001 golden dollar, there's a few suckers to buy these at the rates they are going today with little to no upside IMO.

2004's selling for that much almost seem sane when you look at the people paying outrageous prices for 2005s, which you can still get from the mint!

    Whachta talkin' about, Willis!?

What I can't figure out is who are these people that are still buying 2005 Platinum proofs from the Mint? Don't they know that whenever prices rise on anything from the Mint, the next year the Mint pulls in big time orders? I'm almost willing to bet the final figures for 2005 will surpass the 2003 mintages.

Just as the 1973-S Proof Silver Ike Dollars were the low-mintage Coins in the Ike Series, I'm inclined to believe the 2004 PAE's will be the low-point in their series.
