you look at your collection and think to yourself ...man, I've got some nice coins.....then look at some coins people post here and think....geez, are my coins crappy....then look on ebay and think.....nothing but junk here, mines better.....then scan ANR and think....damn, this one is sooo much better than mine...and so on, and so on....

...or is it just me?

Hard to keep up with the Jones' (unless they adopt you and give you all the cash you need to buy any coin you want!) Just like houses, there's always someone with a bigger, newer, nicer house.

I just try for "nice examples" of coins for my series sets without blowing major bucks(xf45-ms64ish stuff), along with grabbing the keys.......this enables me to do additional sets....i do have a "maximum size" of coins to call my "coin collection", trying to keep it managable.....I slooooowly cull stuff out and upgrade and remain at my perffered quantity size............if you sit and look at your coins and say "ive got some nice coins", then you probably do, enjoy em all

When it really comes down to it, I really only concern myself with what I can't afford and what I can afford to collect. Seeing others' coins makes me appreciate what I've already got, but can also motivtate me to spend my money more wisely as well. I can't afford MS67 Morgans and I really don't want them, so I pass on them. I don't go for low date commons either. So I pass on them. I stay in the AU53-MS65 range and I'm thrilled with the selection, prices and the hobby in general. No one can spend my money but me (and my wife!) and if at the end of the day I'm happy with my collection, then I'm doing alright.

If you are happy with your collection, then you shouldn't concern yourself with whose got a better (or worse) whatever.

Find your niche.

No, I tend to think, "Wow he has some nice coins. Well mine may not be as nice but. . . .THEY'RE MINE!!! ALL MINE!" And if I had an income five to ten times what I do, like he does, I'd probably have some nicer coins as well.

On top of all that I recently read someones opinion that if you can't decern for yourself what is a good Coin vs a bad coin for the grade, then you shouldn't be buying Coins. Slabbed or otherwise.

So ... I've decided to take a vacation from TPG Coins. I'll continue with the US Mint Coins but no more slabs for me.

I got a Road Atlas today. Will be looking at it and deciding where in the USA I want to go. Tops on my list are the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, and the ANA Museum. If I can get 2 weeks this fall, I might drive. If only a week - I might fly, and rent a car.

I figure for the price of an MS65 Peace Dollar, I can get a vacation that is much more satisfying. Who knows - maybe Coin Museums may become my hobby instead of just buying overgraded slabs?

I'm so jealous. Love it out there. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to take a my first road trip with a friend who happened to be an experienced traveler. We basically traveled the from the Rockies to the west coast and from border to border with no real destination each day. As far as I'm concerned, the vacation of a lifetime. Anyway, one of the things that I remember was the night sky and the magnitude of stars that I could see with my naked eye, especially the Milky Way. I was in awe. Living in an urban area, I can see about 20 stars on an average night. When I saw this coin online I asked another friend of mine what they thought about it. They said that they would like it if it didn't have the spots on it. Normally I'd might agree, but in this instance that is one of the reasons why I bought it. I know it doesn't really look like stars or even the Milky Way but that is what it reminds me of every time I look at it. I immediately think of that experience and get warm fuzzies.

on a side note: if you haven't already and can make it that far west, check out Mt.St. Helens...THAT is something to see

I haven't been out West since 1967 - when I was 12 years old. Oops, I was in Idaho on an Army deployment in 1981 - but that was not exactly a purely pleasurable experience. Although rappeling down a 250 ft cliff in the Snake River Canyon was certainly something that's hard to forget.

Been wanting to go see the Tetons ever since I first saw a picture of them a few years back. They remind me of the Italian Alps ( which I got to ski - 1983 - again, with the US Army ).

I might just have to check out Mt St Helens. I saw some of her ash lingering around the landscape in Idaho in 1981, might be interesting to see where that ash came from.

Oh, and by the way, I can see where the Morgan might remind you of a starry night sky. Anything that connects you to a good memory is a winner as far as I'm concerned.

I definitely share the coin envy... I thought my Saint no motto rocked, then I saw some of the other Saints here. Lord M digs up stuff nicer than what I have.
But I do have some neat coins to Impress my nephews when they come around (and give them on holidays!)...

Shoot, I even have a custom made ball mark for next season ! it's got my name on it !!!

Actually I was thinking about that the other day. I have SLQ that just drips with luster that I bought a long time ago. It's a common date, no full head....just a lot of luster. It's the only SLQ I have. It really doesn't go with the scheme of things that I am going through now and I was wondering to myself of why I don't sell/trade for something that I want more. Then I think about the time I dumped so many Morgans when silver was 10 billion dollars an ounce and think of the vams I had(before they were popular) and the regrets I have about it now. I guess I just suffer from mood swings

But you should focus mostly on competing against your own goals and boundaries, rather than concerning yourself too much with what others have. There will always be somebody with something nicer, and always be somebody with something worse than you have.

Admire other people's stuff, but save your true love for the ones YOU own.
