Old PCGS green holders...Coins loose?

I've noticed several green slabed coins turned noticeably, some nearly upside down. Is this because the coins are loose, or the person doing the work just didn't care? Or both. The last one I looked at was a Franklin turned about 170 degrees.

They are loose and have earned the nickname "rattlers"

Beg to differ... green holders aren't rattlers. They are the same technology as today's slabs. PCGS was just sloppy at loading the coins in general. The rattlers are the smaller holders with the coins held by the plastic 'clips' and not the neoprene plastic collars.

Depends on if it is a newer or older green holder. The oldest is the rattler and the coin could be in any position. If it is the newer ones then one slipped past quality control.

This can happen with any holder . If you tap the corner on a hard surface, they usually rotate back. Not really a big deal.

The coin was minted upside down. That's the problem.

Seriously, tap, tap, tap never seems to work for me.

I haven't run into a rotated PCGS coin that I couldn't tap back into position. I hold the slab firmly and tap hard on a pad of Post-it-Notes (only because that is what is available). Don't be afraid to give it a good rap - the coin will rotate inside the holder.

I find that PCGS needs to be more careful to place the coins into the holders properly. Newly holdered coins are OFTEN rotated.image

You've really got to tap it like you mean it sometimes.
