FIRST STRIKE 2006? any word?

I've called PCGS reps the last 3 weeks and asked if PCGS would be slapping "FIRST STRIKE" labels on
the first coins minted for 2006. All they told me was that if they were, they would post it on the website
in the news section.

SO FAR......there is NOTHING about PCGS's plans to do this or anything else new for that matter.
As a matter of fact, I never receive their "e-zine" even though I'm signed up for it so I never know
what's happening at PCGS as far as new products or services go.

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF PCGS WILL BE LABELING ANY 2006 SLABS WITH THE "FIRST STRIKE" DESIGNATION?

WHY IS PCGS BEING SO SECRETIVE?

Yes, the Gold/Silver/Platinum American Eagles will have First Strike labels (for those coins which qualify).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I happened to see a portion of Coin Vault on satellite tv last night..... and they were hyping/bragging that they were going to be the FIRST anywhere to offer the First Strike coins.... this coming Friday. I don't recall them saying PCGS... but who knows? Maybe a special deal was made??

I can't remember.......if a coin is the 100,000th strike from a well-worn pair of dies, but it is submitted before January 31st, does it still qualify as a "First Strike"?

So how will PCGS slab First Strike Proof Silver Eagles when the US Mint isn't going to release those until February?

Simple, all PROOF silver eagles submitted in the first month after they start distributing them will be slabbed as First Strike. I believe that is the same way they did it last year.

there was some huge annoying ad on the coinworld last week that was hyping these things like the greatest thing since sliced bread.

personally I find them to be the equivalent of I Shout at Home network goods.

and...I'm holding out for the LAST STRIKE ones.

I was just going to ask, why would anyone care about a first strike ?
    is a first strike MS68 better than a MS69 or 70 ?

I guess to each his or her own.

I guess these are for coin collectors trying to collecting unique TPG packaging too. I've got a few of these but an MS69 is an MS69 in my book. Coins are produced in batches so you never know how many coins were stuck before. I guess if it were like the old days and the first strikes produced many CAM's and DCAM coins it would be one thing but everyone of these coins are very good quaility.

This is nothing more than marketing hype by some of the big dealers.image
  • whatever you do, don't call pcgs and get your answers straight from the horse's mouth, because it's much better to yell about it and complain that they are being secretive about such an important matter

Actually, here's the complete breaking news image :

Last year it was just First Strikes. As noted above, the only difference is the month in which the coins were struck (i.e., they're not necessarily the first ones off of the dies). This is, of course a bit unfair to coins minted in other months and to the people who like to collect them. Moreover, it is only the tip of the marketing iceberg that is visible above the water. This year (2006), they're expanding the program to 12 issues. They'll have Second Strikes for coins minted in February, Third Strikes for those minted in March right on through Twelfth Strikes for those in December. These are ideal birth month gifts for all your friends and relatives and perfect tie in to the holiday season (On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to, Twelve Twelfth Strike American Eagles, Eleven Eleventh Strike....).

...but...that is just the beginning. In 2007, they are discontinuing the First Strike, Second Strike, etc and actually putting the day of mintage on the slab. Even better for those birthday gifts as the slab will have the exact date of mintage and can be selected to match a birthday, anniversary, etc. Also, they will be the perfect gift for new borns--all their life they can treasure a bullion eagle "born on" the same day as they were. Too bad for those looking for a date that falls on a weekend or Federal holiday as the Mint is closed on those days. 2007 Daily Strike American Eagle Registry sets will have approximately 250 coins, each with a different date of mintage. Some of these dates will no doubt be near impossible to find in MS 70 making this one of the most competitive sets in the Registry.

Hopefully, by 2008, technology will be such that the exact time of mintage will be known and that can be added to the date, further expanding the gift giving and set collecting opportunities.

Probably talking apples 'n oranges here, but...
since this is centered around ASE's...

Can anyone tell me what the T-1, Proof 2005-W ASE, is supposed to
    be??

Did any of the TPG's do a Proof "First Strike" attribution?

Seems as tho all those I've seen attributed as "First Strike" have been non-proof issues...?

  • WH,
now that is a great marketing plan and sure to be a hit. I normally would only buy
any graded silver eagle to give as a gift, not interested in collecting them like that
but they will make just that, great gifts.
it is interesting in that they are planning on doing born on dating yet
some of the most desireable dates would be federal holidays.
Wouldn't it be nice to get a graded 4th of july silver eagle in a flag colored holder,? Yep.

If beer can have "born on" dates, why not coins????

so i would assume that if you got silver proof 19 th century coins that are fully struck with no weakness whatsoever and are deeply mirrored and monster cameoed these would be first strike coins also? and would be certified as such on the holders??

Naw, that's the old, so-called "logical" definition of "first strike." We don't use that any more.....

  • This "first strike" horse crap is one of the most ridiculous things in the numismatic world of collecting. I think that no one should put this designation on their holders. The hypsters have mis-used this phrase to mean "better quality" or somehow a better coin, when in reality that's not what it was intended to mean at all. So, since it is being mis-used, I think that if it's going to be included then it should have the "sucker magnet" designation just under the "first strike".
