Question on Philippine/American coin prices

Ok, it's been about a month since I stated collecting PhilAm coins. I have since aquired Lyman Allen's book, Aldo Basso's book and the red book that covers PhilAm coins........

So the question is ( and I know the Allen & Basso books are dated)...........How accurate is the red book and are there any other sources for up to date values?...........Thanks in advance.......Rick

Well, there's Krause, but that's not necessarily up to date.

I personally use Krause and the Red Book side-by-side (for lack of anything else).

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Hi Rick, Allen's 5th Ed and Krause's 33rd Ed are your best bet for circulated US Phils. The prices are pretty close to market. However, for MS condition, especially the higher grades, I've found both to be off by quite a bit, sometimes by as much as 4 or 5 times.

    Hello 21 Walker:

Once again, Mr. Filam hits the nail on the head.

For the common date, circulated coins, I think the Allen catalog is not unreasonable.

But for the scarce dates, the red coppers, and high grades, the prices are imageimageimage

The last time I looked -- outside of a handful of common dates, like the 03 half centavo or the 1944 centavo -- I have gladly paid triple his published price for a PCGS coin in that condition. .

And on many, many of the coins I'd gladly pay (and have paid) 5 or even 10 times Allen's price for.

So I suggest you buy from Lyman Allen at 50% over his published prices, double it and sell the coins to me. imageimage

    Enjoy yourself!

Krause books can usually be picked up cheaper on eBay. Look for the 2004 or 2005 editions. Coin values don't change much.
