Safe 2x2 extrication

Another thread pointed out a really nice unc. Liberty nickel that got mauled by a staple, presumably when the coin was removed from a 2x2. What's your favorite method for getting coins out of 2x2s? I poke a hole in the mylar with a pencil and peel the plastic away. The staples stay where they are and the coin gets out unscathed.

    I have never understood how people can do this. I peel apart 2x2 holders all the time and the staples just seperate and then the coin falls out.

    I need someone to show me how not to do it because I cannot understand how to get a staple scratch on a coin.

    If my finger nails can't take the saple out of the 2X2, an exacto knife to pierce the clear portion of the flip (gently) and also (gently) 'drop' it on a cushioned surface......works well............Rick

    I just make sure the staples stay up and the coin stays down. Never have had a problem for over 25 years.

    Yup. I use the pencil method or just take scissors and cut one side off the 2X2.

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    I use a tooth pick to punch a few holes in the mylar and then bend the holder and the coin falls out. Fast, safe, and easy.

    I don't think this is always possible because of space constraints. I use a pair of narrow head pliers to gently pull up the two sides of the staple. Once the 2 sides are vertical i use a pair of pliers with a wide head to push the staple "up". I then use the narrow head pliers to gently and slowly pull the staple out. It is not a slow as it sounds and I have never scratched a coin.

    Very carefully cut the cardboard and take out the coin. You need to becareful not to put fingerprints on the coins, too.

    I do like some have mentioned....I remove the staples first then I open the flip and take out the coin.

    I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Cutting the flip open with a scissor on the edge away from the coin is the absolute easiest and safest way to remove a coin from a 2x2 flip.

    Pop the plastic with a toothpick. The mylar rips easily, so I can just pop the coin out through the hole. I NEVER separate staples and try to exit the coin through the side of the holder.

    BTW, I recently stopped taking coins for attribution in 2x2 stapled holders because it slows the whole process way down when I have to carefully remove staples from the holders then put new ones back in when I'm finished with the coin. I would prefer to be able to slide the coin out, photograph it, study it, slide it back in, and send it home.

    2x2 staple holders may have their purpose somewhere, but not around me. I'd rather pay a penny more per holder and use flips.
