Bust Dime question

What is the rarity of the 1834 Bust Dime with the oversized D in UNITED in VF grade?
I believe Breen said the D was the punch for the Half Dollars.
This variety is Breen 3203; Davis 2; may be JR-2.

R-5 in the Dime Book. It says at least 12 specimens grade VF-20 or better.
JRCS Census says it's been lowered to an R-3.

In the many years since publication of "Early United States Dimes" we have seen a number of the supposed "rare" die marriages (R-5 to R-7) turn up in increasing numbers, thus rarity estimates made by the authors are being adjusted downward. As an aside, but along similar lines, the Bust Half Nut Club does an unparalleled job of keeping track of rarity estimates for Bust Half Dollars. Similar efforts in the JRCS toward consensus estimates are commendable, but do not compare in terms of accuracy of results, in my opinion.
  • Thanks, Elwood.

I don't know how the JRCS Census is tabulated. I think?? it is calculated according to feedback from members and member collections??
So, yes the JRCS numbers are not perfect, but do show that some of the rarer varieties have come down. I think it also shows that a couple of the very rare (R-7's) varieties are still very rare.

Elwood, you are correct. The JRCS census comes from (mostly) members. Others are welcome to submit lists of their holdings (most recently, MrHalfDime solicited lists of early half dimes for the soon-to-be-published census). For all of the smaller denominations (half dime to quarter), each census reveals what one might expect: some die marriages have not had their rarity estimates changed, whereas others have come down one or two levels. As is the case with privately-held items such as coins, the validity of the census results are subject to owners' assessments of grade and attribution.

Every quarter or so there is a message sent out to JRCS members asking for information about the population of a specific series in their collections. I would imagine this can lead to substantial under counting of some if not all die marriages as some people won't/don't reply, not every bust owner is a member of the JRCS and there no doubt are some incorrectly attributed coins out there.

True, but it does offer some emperical data relating to relative rarity of one variety to another. In other words: ratios.
