Was there a big coin scandal in October, 1982--same coin sold multiple times to investors?

I was reading the new QDB book on investing in rare coins, and in the section on the importance of actually taking possession of your coins, he refers to a big coin scandal in October, 1982. Supposedly some firm was selling great rarities, but to multiple people. The trick was that the coins were held by the seller, and each purchaser didn't know that his coin was also "sold" to someone else. Supposedly, if you wanted to visit your coins, you could do so by appointment, but only if owners #2,3,4,5, 6, etc. were not there at the same time.

Does anyone know the name of this firm? I wanted to look into it a little bit more.

Longacre, this is off the topic of your post, but I just had to say that I have been so very interested in all of your thought-provoking questions that you attribute to your reading of Mr. Bowers' latest book that I have ordered the book!
  • Why don't you call or email the author and ask him?
