My grades just posted from 6 coins I cracked out of old green PCI holders:

1922 No D Strong Reverse 1c PCI VG8 now bodybag cleaned (not entirely surprised here, but figured it might get a pass at that grade level)
1939 1c PCI PR65RD still PR65RD
1911 5c PCI 63 still 63
1939-D 25c PCI 64 now 65
1879-S Rev. 78 $1 PCI 63 now 64 (WOOT!)
1900-S PCI 63 now bodybag cleaned (D'Oh!)-- this one has me puzzled, but I guess every submission has to have one WTF coin.

Overall, it looks like you did pretty well with the old pci holders- do you have any pics of the 1900-S?
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
  • I wonder if you would get those grades had you left them in the existing holders when submitting ?

    p.s. Congratulations !!!

LOL@WTF.... good return for the money, John.

I've long said.... PCI isn't too bad at hittin' the mark. Though I have been laughed at for that one. Here you got a couple of upgrades...pity about the bodybags. I always leave mine in the plastic with the instructions "REGRADE".... if it drops too far, PCGS is gracious enough to return them DNC. Just FYI.

Congrats on the PCI Crack Outs.

I am starting to think that cracking out is the way to go. I keep getting cross overs returned with no explanation. Including NGC coins. I never put a min grade so I'm not sure whats up.

So what is the best method to crack a slab open?

My personal opinion is that you are far better off sending any grading service raw coins...seeing any other service's opinions of grade would automatically skew results, and they cannot possibly claim it doesn't - it's human nature to criticize and/or scrutinize your competitors.

coppercoins... I agree with your reasoning, but I am confident that PCGS scrutinizes the coin and not the grading company. I truly do believe this. Am I naive ?

    Yes.

PCGS's position in the marketplace is 50% market perception.
  • To crack open or not to crack open. I have three (3) coins graded by ANACS that I was going to send to PCGS. Should I crack them out first or send them as is? The coins are as follows,

    1916-D Merc, AG-3 (Could pass as a 4)
    1916-D Merc, VG-8 (Looks like a 10+)
    1916-S Walking Liberty Half, MS-63

Or should I just keep them as is?

I haven't received the coins back yet. I'll post a picture of the 1900-S and others when I get them. PCI was pretty brutal on "red-labelling" coins back then, which is why this one surprised me. All coins were cracked out before submitting. Cracking out the proof cent was the most unnerving.
