how many dealers know of, or would admit that a collector knows how to grade better than you in there specialized series? flame away ,this wanabe wants to here it all!image

    Well, I'm not a dealer so I don't count here - but I know a number of people who grade a lot of the different coins better than I do...however, with regard to the Lincoln cent I have been told by many that I am one of the best there is. With that having been said, and I'm still not sure I agree with it, I would say that I would have to be better than a number of dealers at grading Lincolns if the opinions of the others from whom I have received praise in the area are indeed correct.

    I know I can grade Lincolns well...and I can explain what I am doing in grading them, and exactly why the coins I see get the grades I assign. Whether I am one of the best in the industry at it is a very debatable issue, in my humble opinion. I have, however, seen a vast number of coins recently in dealer showcases that are either undergraded or (much more commonly) overgraded by at least a few points.

    I am not a dealer...I grade roosies and mercs pretty well.image

    It's a fact for sure. And in many cases that same collector may be able to grade his series better than the TPG's. One of the benefits of specializing. With so many series out there, a dealer has his work cut out to be expert in more than a few. Many dealers are specialists too. Few are experts all-around. Just as few have scored high in the WS of Grading.

    Exactly why, as a newbie, I specialized in Ikes and SBAs, and, in 2 years (against a life-long love of coins and learning the basics of grading), have learned to grade these pretty well. This does not mean I understand PCGS grading of one of 4 or 5 PCGS holders. But you bet I can pick out a solid 63 or 64 Ike that is grungy and therefore in the dealers $3 pile just waiting for a little TLC....... Rob
