EBAY bogus second chance coin offers...Lets fight back.

I may have a solution. Every time that you receive a fake second chance offer, respond that you would like to buy the coin. Once they hear from you, it appears to take a significant amount of time and effort, for the scumbags to put the final offer together. Once they get back to you, let them know that you are on to them. If we overload them, perhaps they will move on, and leave us alone.

  • A week or so ago, I got a real second chance offer, and blew it off as a fake (The real ones appear in your Ebay messages file). I didn't realize that it was legit until too late, and would have bought the coin.

I have done this once before, Mark. Someone in Bulgaria claimed that they owned the coin and that their girlfriend had possession of it in the US. They wanted me to send them money via Western Union or some such thing. We emailed back and forth a bit, and while it was amusing for a while, it was mostly a waste of time. Does anyone know someone who has been burned by one of these second chance offers?

I do not know of anyone who has been burned, but I receive 3 to 5 emails a week, from underbidders who want to know if the offers are legit (I never use them). I figure that if that many think they might be ok, then at least a few, are falling for the scam.

Curiously, I've received 2 legit second-chance offers in the last two or three weeks (I've received the coins already, so they were definitely legit). I don't think I've ever received a bogus second-chance offer.

FWIW, in both cases the items were widgets, and my response to the seller was, "Since you obviously have two, is there any chance you have three?" One seller thought she did, but couldn't find the third. The other seller ended up selling me 9. There aren't too many times that it's good to come in second place, but that was one of them...

  • The bogus offers are for high priced coins. The ones I get, are for $1000 and up. It does take them time and effort, to put these things together.

I played along a bit on this one. The initial announcement had the e-bay look and feel, but did not show in my e-bay massages. Also, I wasn't second on the coin... I was abbout eigth! I thought about playing a little further but just dropped it. Read about scambaiters on the Internet for ideas on stringing these people along.

Its a shame that people do this as it prompts the sellers to have private auctions, I like to know who I am bidding against. I also have a deal with another cu member to avoid bidding against each other. I have a Rolex watch for sale on the Net and four people have tried to scam me out of it! The current one sent me a fake paypal "YOU GOT CASH" and wanted to have ups pick it up from my home, apparently so he did not have to give me his address. If a nice coin is getting bid up by a ebay newbie I email the seller and make an offer if the transaction does not take place instead of bidding against someone who is just having "fun" and running the price up. Take care, Mark imageDid you know ebay has a category "Totally Bizarre" Only look if you are bored!(and wont outbid me)
