What 2005 US Mint product has most potential...

tincuptincup Posts: 5,423 ✭✭✭✭✭
So of all of the US Mint issues this year... what do you believe will have the most potential for price increases and why? Likewise... which ones will prove to be dogs?

I really think the Legacy Set will prove to be a winner, due to it being a proof set type option silimar to Prestige sets, and with the lowest mintage of them all. My next choice would be the Mint set, due to the satin finish and the 2 satin finish 1year type nickels.

The dogs? I don't expect the silver proof set to do much.

What's your opinion?

I saw a friends Proof Marine Com. The other day and I think every Marine and ex Marine is going to want one of those in the futher. This one has the sky as a limit in years to come.
The Satin finish mint sets I think where over produced. I think I will start trying to unload some of them right after Holidays.

Maybe the Uncirculated Marine is a better coin to hold?? Any thoughts?

On a percentage basis it will probably be non-satin finish Philly dimes.

I'm betting on the Legacy Set. Those sets had to of been a special batch of coins. Way to many prefect coins to be run of the mill Proof stuff IMO.

If the US Mint realleay does start producing Sacagawea's in quantity (I'm not talking the 400 mil or even 100 min), mayme 50 mil, the public will start collecting. So, the Legacy Set and 2003 thru 2005 unc Sacs.

I don't think any 2005 US Mint item is a good investment

  • From my understanding the 2005 Platinum Proof coins have some very low mintages maybe even lower than the 2004's. I beleive today was the last day to order them, so we will find out soon if indeed they were.

The 2005 Nickel will probably be a winner since ithe design was changed and at the same time made available in Satin Finish. Next year they will go back to the old design I beleive.

The 2005 Nickel Detached Leg and Speared Bison will also be in demand since there not easily found and are visible without a glass.

A really neat die polished also came out recently in the past 2 weeks. It is the 2005 Kansas Quarter which also appears with a detached leg. Most of all it seen with the naked eye. From the looks of it , it might be harder to find than the detached leg nickel.

The 2005 MS Marine Commmoratives will also be in demand because of the 50,000 max sets produced. With many Marines in service it will also add to the demand.

The 2005 Satin Finish set as well. All coins are Satin Finish and really look appealing to the collector IMO.

I agree with the Marine Corp. Coin. It's a nice pic + as previously state lots of vets will collect them. The good news is most of them will probably take them out of the holder to look at them with their families so in a few years there will be fewer high end coins even with it's large mintage.

I agree, the Legacy set is the home run for 2005. It is the perfect storm of something in limited quantity, few speculators loading up, and possibly the start of a new series of sets. If the mint starts making Legacy-type sets every year, the 50,000 run in 2005 will be widely sought after. Even if the mint doesn't, the small run is sure to make it hold value. Not many sellers except the flippers and they will all be done in a year. Few dealers have any significant inventory and those that do, paid high for their sets. Collectors holding the sets are unlikely to sell. The high initial price means only those with fairly deep pockets ordered them. Higher prices might actually decrease supply, because collectors will think they have a gold-mine. In my opinion, they will be right.

The contrary view is that it is just cardboard. However, there are cases where packaging and not the coins are what drives the demand.

Next, up would be the Marine coin and stamp set. The Marine coins themselves have too high a mintage to go up much in price. Plenty of speculators loaded up with the 100 coin limit, as did many smaller dealers.

The Unc mint set. Even though they made quite a few, when you consider only 1 million satin nickels compared to 1.8 Billion business strikes and more than 2M Proofs, that's gotta be worth something.

The Legacy only for which it will go up in lock step with the coins in the set. Still can't figure how stupid people have to be to pay the premium. But wait I just had a thought, I'll put on ebay, all in one auction, one Mint Proof set, a Proof Marine and a Proof Marshall. I guess that'll fetch $250.

  • For some reason I am betting on the 6 coin Nickel sets...they are sleepers...
  • I am betting on the 1/2 oz proof platinum eagles.

  • The American Legacy Collection has the most potential not only this year but since the 1999 silver proof set.

One thing about it.... the US Mint sure had a lot of different offerings this year. I don't know what is in the pipeline for next year, but just feels like it may be much more boring as compared to what has been offered this year with the nickel versions, satin uncs, Legacy sets, etc. But will have to wait and see what they can dream up to take my money....! I wonder when they will offer another gold commem....?

  • I think the Satin Finish coins could do well in the long run, especially if the coin book/holder industry latches on to these as a separate and distinct 'type'. In other words, if the quarter and nickel holder books start making slots for the 'Unc', 'Proof', and 'Satin Finish' issues in years where it applies, then those filling sets will need to get mint sets (or broken up mint sets) to fill the slot. Over time, I think this will make up for the fact that they produced more mint sets this year than last.

I like the Marine Commemorative, too. The proof is nice, but I was surprised to find that I actually like the Satin Finish UNC version beter. It really is a nice looking coin. It will be interesting to see if, for once, the UNC version ends up doing better than the proof for this commemorative.

it's the beginning of a mint program for kids to learn about collecting and this was
the first year. Probably few ordered them and it's a program that is going to continue.
  • The newly discovered 2005 Bison DDO which have all been found in 6 coin Westward Journey sets will help these sets. Difficult to see unless you are know the error so I expect there will be a lot of cherry picking going on at shows and shops.

I ordered one for the heck of it. My kids thought it was pretty cool. Hopefully in the future, they will do one on mint errors and include a waffle coin, wrong planchet, die rotation, clashed die, off center strike, and a 1955 cent like DDO. Somehow, I think not -- but it would be cool.

Now, THAT would be a worthwhile "Letter to the Editor" for either Numistmatic News or CoinWorld....you should send that to them.....I like the suggestion (though, I doubt they would go for some of it, they may do a waffle or something......)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
