Anyone know the history behind GOLD & SILVER EMPORIUM?
Not the best lighting...very clean obv; rev. has some hits below each wing.
But the color is what gets me....a somewhat blue steel color, very dark, but at the right angle a silvery blue & purple color.....I like it.

Yes. PCGS started to slab coins in 1986 with NGC and ANACS following soon later. This one is dated 11/19/85. This appears to be a coin company slab rather than an independant coin grading company slab. In other words, the grade came from the seller. I'm sure Conder knows more about this since he's the expert on this subject.

Sorry, can't help you. I've never seen one of these before. I've only seen two, possibly three, other companies that have used this type of holder.
I agree Barry Stuppler would be the person to ask about these, and I think I may just have to do that.

PCGS yes, ANACS no. ANACS started authenticating in 1972 and started grading in Jan of 1979. (They didn't slab though until late 1989.)

I have contacted an employee of G&SE back in the eighties who is still in the hobby (MUCH more than a hobbie to him).
Unfortunately, company policy does not allow his comments to be shared here.
I also emailed Barry, maybe we can get lucky & he will share with us his thoughts 20 years ago that made him start grading and encapsulating coins, with all due respect to PCGS of course!

What about shared privately?
I have found that there is still a business by the name GOLD & SILVER EMPORIUM. It is located in Santa Monica just about 10 miles from where the one in Encino was. There may be a good chance that the two firms are the same company. I have their address but unfortunately they don't seem to have a website or e-mail address. I'll have to contact them by snail mail.
If there was anything really interesting in his reply I would have added it, routine stuff.....worked there from XX to XX, did some buying,.......
Still, it was from someone who lived it.

Gold and Silver Emporium was a coin and bullion shop located in Encino(Los Angeles), CA on Ventura Blvd back in the late 1970's, 1980's and early 1990's. It store was run by Barry Stupplar and Joe Battaglia and was highly invested in Gold and Silver bullion. They issued the holders from mid 1980's until the early 1990's and guaranteed to buy the coins back at the grade listed in the authenticity. Much of their grading was actually quite conservative, however, they charged a substantial premium which negated the effects of conservative grading. Thus, if you sold the coin back to them, you would lose the 40% markup, even though they would pay bid price for the coin. Usually, the company graded MS quality US gold and type. On occasion, they promoted Silver dollars in these type of holders. Joe Battaglia eventually wanted out of the partnership and Barry Stupplar remained, under a new name.
Much of their grading was actually quite conservative......I agree, this is a nice coin for the grade, obv is very clean, a few hits on the rev, only 1 really noticeable in the fields.
BUT the more I think about this....was there price lists for graded coins?
Would they (G&SE) buy back their graded coins at (in my case) MS64, or just buy back the coin at BU prices?
