I'm having an hard time right now with coins....

Hello everyone,

As most of you will know, I'm a 17 year old boy who lives in the Netherlands. I've been collecting US coins for a few years now, trying to specialize evertime, but it changes quite often (sounds familiar?)image). The last year, I've been quickly buying, and selling some even quicker $200 and plus coins. Not bad for my age I would think...

A few months ago, after several packages were lost in the mail the preceding months (those packages need to go trough half of the globe, so there sure is some risk) I decided that the best would be to wait a few years, when I can go more easier to the US (I must admit I've never been there). So that means:

-No more expensive buys in the states
-Quitting collecting real "sets"

AND

-keep studying patterns and gold coins

Now, the last thing isn't really a problem. But the top two areimage

Evertime I look at several dealer inventories (Wayne Herndon or Heritage for example) I see some top coins I really would like to own. For example a GEM 1904-O Morgan Dollar in Wayne's inventory. Beautiful coin, but I just can't dare to buy it right now......image

I will be studying next year for real (a 4 year study Accountancy), and after that get a real job. Hopefully at that time there will be some accountant jobs in the States available, tough it could be hard as I have my own things here besides coins (mainly soccerimage)...

Offcourse, I still love studying pattern coins. Some of you might noticed I haven't published any articles the last few months, but that's due to other reasons. They will come this winter again for sureimage). So that's not the problem....

But, how the heck should I come trough those years???

image

HELP!!!

Anyone got any tips for this dutch boyimage??

Dennis

  • Just be patient. I'm nearing 30 with a kid on the way. I still can't afford to buy the coins in the grades I like best.

Join the US Air Force and get assigned to Shinnen or Brunssum. Then you could have coins sent to your APO Box and still have soccer.

  • I'm in the end of my college years and trust me I had more money when I was 17 then now, living on your own sucks.

As for advice you just have to be very picky, also you live in a foriegn country sell your pocket change on eBay as "Exotic Coins" to the U.S.
a roll of Nerthelands quarters should sell for a small profit.

    Sounds like a great offer!!

Also, you could come and study in the US.

And, I suppose you could work out something with a trusted friend in the US who could buy the coins for you and hold them until you were able to come and pick them up. This is a viable alternative to shipping them. Of course the downside is that you won't be able to see them in person until you visit. PM me if you need some referrals.

  • You're a mature young man. Get your education and maybe do some quick trips to the US to buy coins. If you travel in the off season, there could be cheap rates. Or travel to a major coin show here in the states. Best of luckimage

It would be hard to find a quarter in the Netherlands.... then again, maybe a 20 cent piece would draw more interest!

Not sure of what kind of mail system they have where you at but if at all like ours you may want to check to see if they have stuff like registered mail or certified mail and also, insured mail. If you have stuff sent to you from here, insist on something like that because we do. Yes it's more expensive, but that way things don't dissapear. At least not as much. When my son was taking some college courses in Poland, I was sending him camera lenes, film and other photography items and all were sent registered and insured. For one year there were at least a hundred or so sent and none were lost. I don't think that the Polish Mail system, nor ours are really as bad as so many have come to say. However, each story of missing stuff really scares so many of us. If they are going to lose my mail, why can't it ever be the bills?

    Hi Dennis,

So sorry to read of your recent problems. Just remember what the Stones say, "Time, it's on my side". You don't realize it now, because every fiber of your being wants to "grow up" and at least half of you feel you already have (at least that's how I felt at 17) but you really do have your entire life a head of you. Your plan to read and study will only pay benefits in the future and will most likely save you from making some costly mistakes too. You'll make it!

Ps, just curious, were the things lost in the mail, things you shipped or shipped to you?

In comparison to Western European countries, Poland still has some serious problems with opportunistic employees of the postal system. That said, it appears that problems can occur in the States and/or Holland as well. Also, I believe indemnity from the US is limited to $45 on insurance claims on insured packages, so that's not the solution. However, sending something registered is the way to go to avoid losses.

You should talk with a dealer that visits your part of the world with some regularity and see if you can work with him. I know Mr. Eureka is in Amsterdam Copenhagen on a fairly regular basis...
