What's the most you've ever saved by waiting to buy a coin later??

Was thinking of this on the way home tonight for some reason.

What's the most you've saved by being patient, passing on a coin and buying it later?? Specifics encouraged.

Nothing. You should always buy right away for full price.image

Only about 15%...but you run the risk of losing it entirely.

Within the past 2 years, I passed on a gorgeous orig 1879 25c in NGC MS67 because it was a bit too much money in the "wrong" holder. It later came back to me for a 2nd chance at $600 cheaper. I took it. I'd have felt dumb if someone else had gotten it for just a tad more.

A few years ago I passed on a great coin at auction that went for $52K. Within a year, I was able to buy the SAME coin off the Heritage site for $30K - a savings of $22K. imageimage

I'm sure someone can beat that - let's hear about it.

Well there's lots of coin that tanked in the 1980 market that you could have bought back later for much less. Same for 1990.

As a rule you could be many of these for 30 cents on the dollar.
I did just that for a monster gem seated quarter that fetched $30,000 in 1980 at auction. 6 years later I picked it up for $10,000.
4 years after that it was worth $50,000 again.

I'm sure that felt good, but the coin IS trending downward. So "saving" may be the right term if it's gone back up, but what if it's continued to fall? And it's not really saving at all if it was worth $30,000 when it sold for $52,000. Is it now worth more than you paid?

More variables and details than I expected!

Bought the coin in 2002 and sold it in 2004 at the auction price.

the oxymoron is : how much was SAVED .....waiting to BUY.

It's like I have said countless times.....IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO SAVE WHEN SPENDING.

It's much the same as STOPPING while you are GOING.

So the clear answer would be : NOTHING, I saved nothing waiting to buy a coin later.... but I did buy a coin sooner a few times... for a lot more than I should have. Ah, if I'd only waited image.

  • The better question might be, how much more did it cost, because you waited?

Some of these posts prove my point. Keep your hobbies and your investments separate! Give your ego a boost and collect something rare. Give your financial situation a boost and stay with CDs, mutual funds, stocks, and such as that.

Thats my take on it anyway

Great question, I am still waiting to save about $5.5 million. I passed on the 33 Saint and am waiting to buy one of the ten that will surely come up for auction. image

Seriously though, several times I have resisted the temptation to hit the button, the last time I saved about $350 on a Morgan graded 67PL by passing on it at a major auction and finding a nicer one from a dealer.
