2005 Nickels....Buffs and WW...have you seen them???

Have you rec'd a 2005 Buffalo or Western Waters nickel in your change?? I still have not rec'd a Buffalo/Jeff 5c in change yet? I'm starting to believe that the 05 Buff. 5c may be the most hoarded coin of all time. What say you??

  • I receive the bison and ocean nickels in change on a fairly consistant basis. I see no need to hoard them. Many of them are of poor quality anyway.

I am still getting full rolls of the Ocean in View nickels in my cash drawer at work. I saved and looked through two of them. They were in pretty bad shape (Philadelphia). I never got the buffalo nickels in rolls at work. I had to get them at the bank.

We have received five D Bison's from the supermarket here in N San Diego. All of them have Mint luster and seem to be BU. I have the 5 sitting her on the desk. Nothing seen of the ocean is sight coins.

  • About 2 months ago I received a 2003 P nickel in change. That is the ONLY post 2002 nickel I have received so far. The Buffalo is without a doubt the most widely hoarded coin. Ten percent of the entire mintage went straight from the mint directly to the nations coin collectors without ever having even gone through the Federal Reserve. Probably another ten percent was probably sucked up by by collectors in rolls from there local banks as well. So 20% of the entire mintage is already in the hands of the coin collectors in mint state. So about 1% of the population is holding 20% of the mintage. If the rest of the population holds on average one coin per person because "Hmmm, that's different", the entire mintage is gone.

Occasionally I get some of the bison nickels, I don't recall any of the western waters coming in change nickels however.
  • ......In Oregon there is a lot, and I mean a lot of Buffs and Ocean nickels in change every day.....One thing though' the real rareity is anything from Philly.....I've had to go to the net to help the kids with there cent and nickel books.....image
  • I'm spending the Bisons, but usually whoever is working the register immediately buys them.

I've received maybe 1-2 Ocean IV so far.

  • I've gone through a number of bags to find a few good examples and some minor errors. I've dumped the rest back into circulation. (5000+)

I have seen one Buffalo and one Western Waters, total. I have actually seen more of the classic Buffalos (5 of them) then of the new ones. I am seeing the new state quarters on a regular basis now.

I receive them in change (Seattle area) all the time actually.
    Same for new state quarters.

Wish I could get the Philly mintmarks, but those take a few years and get dinged up before getting here image

I'm in downtown New York, adjacent to both the Federal Reserve and Chase Manhattan Plaza, and I've yet to see a single buffalo nickel.

I went through 5 rolls of nickels yesterday and found 12 2004 handshake ones, 9 keelboats and only 1 Buff and 1 ocean... I'm not worried about any hoarding though.. I have a few of each.
