What is the reason for the 5 year gap in Peace dollar production?

No one in the general populace could afford to buy anything. Therefore none were needed for commerce.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Of course, the great depression. Was all coinage stopped or just the dollars?
  • The "VAM" book describes this in detail -- but from what I recall, the only reason Peace Dollars were struck in 1934-35 was to "replace" the remaining silver dollars melted under the Pittman Act.

There was no need for Silver Dollars in commerce even during good times (except for the gaming industry), so once the "Pittman melts" were replaced, Silver Dollars were no longer minted.
  • The Peace dollars ended in 1928 with the completion of the recoinage of those melted under the Pitman Act. The 1934 and 35 dollars were the result of another government silver purchase.

Yeah, Conder that's it -- I recalled it incorrectly.
