Silver, Gold, Platinum Eagle MS70 PR70 appreciate?

I need some input. Is is true that premium grade Eagle coins (MS70 PR70) will appreciate over time? Is it a good decision to invest on these kind of coins? What factors that affects the fluctuation of these coins? Why the prices in PCGS price guide are way off the actual prices that we actually acquired from Ebay or any dealers? In, that case, where can we get the actual value on these coins? Any comment on these Eagle coins are appreciated.

Thank you,
Theo.

I would not invest in any coin. However, if the prestige of owning a PR70 entertains you indulge.

    I numbered your questions.
    * 1 - no one knows for sure, almost everyone has an opinion. I believe the majority of U. S. collectors would vote NAY.
    * 2 - if you are asking, the answer is absolutely NO. Anyone asking for investment advice on a coin board is in over her/his head.
    * 3 - As with everything-supply and demand. With moderns there is a higher risk of more coins being made and grading standards changing.
    * 4 - As with any price guide they sometimes are correlated with reality and sometimes not.
    * 5 - prices realized, ebay, Teletrade, Heritage. With ultra-high grade coins, the quality of the coin can make all the difference. If you don't know what that means, stay away. Not all MS65s are created equal, neither are all MS70s. Try walking a large show and getting offering prices from several dealers with moderns in their case. This will open your eyes and give you a better idea of the market.
  • When the 06s come out I'll look for a nice ungraded SAE for my album. As far as proof ASEs go, I bought 3 05s. They come in a nice velvet box, in a protective plastic container, with a coa.

All 3 look great to me. Spend money to have them graded? no way.

Could I change my mind about it later? Sure.

    Theo: Welcome to the boards.

Your personal research will, hopefully, assist you in trying to answer your questions. I just wanted to add that, as with nearly any coin series in MS and Proof, there will be specific "target coins" to pursue within the series that you will determine through your own research and investigation over time. By way of example only, you may determine that various PR70DC $25 Gold Eagles make little sense to pursue at current levels, while the MS70 examples make great sense. Or, that PR70DC Silver Eagles make no sense to you as compared to PR70 Plats. Or just the opposite... and so on. IMHO, there are some terrific Eagle coins to pursue at this time (even in the 69 grade) as well as some "non-starters". I find collectors often make the mistake of lumping an entire series of coins into a specific question concerning the overall possibilities for a series of coins. In the case, you are asking specific questions concerning roughly 270 different and distinct coins with mintages of those 270 coins ranging from below 5,000 coins on the one hand to in excess of 1,000,000 coins on the other.

Good luck with your study of this fabulous series of coins.

    1) Is is true that premium grade Eagle coins (MS70 PR70) will appreciate over time? It is equally valid to say the prices will fall over time
    2) Is it a good decision to invest on these kind of coins? No
    3) What factors that affects the fluctuation of these coins? Whatever a willing buyer and willing seller agree upon
    4) Why the prices in PCGS price guide are way off the actual prices that we actually acquired from Ebay or any dealers? The price guide is more conceptual than real-world, and the only tie to eBay is sellers touting the PCGS Price Guide price so when people pay 25% they think they got a deal
    5) In, that case, where can we get the actual value on these coins?See #3

I think there is some very good deals in the Platinum Proofs with very low mintages and the 2004 MS coins. I buy them in the box they came in and the PCGS,NGC, or ANACS MS/PF 69 grade since they don't sell for too much over spot. I did buy a 1/10 ounce 05 at $210 from the mint, a big risk but most won't buy these at this level and may make them rare in the future. You may have to wait a decade before they come into vogue but I've noticed a lot of price increases in the last 6 month on the proofs. People are building collections and taking notice of the mintages. It's hard to fail if you like me think Platinum will go anywhere but up with the state of the nation. Good Luck.image

    Welcome to the boards.

If your are still interested in Platinum Eagles after reading this thread, here is my experience.

IMHO, in the Mint State focus on the "top coins" which would be MS70 (and even with MS70 buy the coin not the holder ) in the early "reverse proof " struck years (2003 an prior, they mark easier than post 2003 coins, IMHO) and know the pop and mintage numbers for each denomination and year to further try to sort "condition" rarity.

Remember that the Plats are a very inefficient market at this time. My time horizon is well beyond 10 years to mitigate some of that risk.

In the Proofs, many are well preserved in the US Mint holders, and the pops (PR70) tend to creep (grade-flation), so you take your chances there. Of course all Plats have base bullion value as already mentioned.

I believe there are many better places to invest your money, but if you must combine collecting with investing in Plats, that is where I put my $$$. Also, you can search on key words in these forums to find past threads that may help you further.

Mitch at Wondercoin is a great source for the Plat coins.
