It looks a little like the coins that were set into a floor and trod on for years. It's still not quite right though and it wouldn't explain how the obverse became so worn unless it was carried as a pocket piece first.
I live in Texas & around here it would not be unusual to see one like that. I have seen them mounted in horses bridles & on saddles & hatbands & in one instance in a mans boot heels !! Silver dollars were popular for that !! Especially around the border !!
