Color change inside a case?

Do any of you folks have experience with coins changing colors? I have a slabbed Columbus commemorative, that I swear was brighter when I first got it. There's some splotches that are slightly "orange-er"(more oxidized?) than rest of the coin. They're on both sides. I don't see any ridges like a finger print. Maybe I didn't notice it before, but I'd hate to have it get worse

A coin that wasn't rinsed properly after dipping can develop blotches later. Is the coin slabbed? If not, what are you storing it in?

[edit] I guess a slabbed Columbus would be... slabbed. image [/edit]

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Older NGC holders can be major culprits...

  • doctored coins will loose tone and become dark.
toned coins can continue to get new color as long as the sulfer on the coin is not nuetralized.
also air is needed so if its air tight it may stop toning.

I have some dollars with "ANACS Toning," which is a purple upper obverse and lower reverse rim. Could be that these had been dipped at some time before being holdered.

Coins, whether previously dipped, doctored or not, can react or oxidize in their holders. The type of holder and the environment it is stored in can make a big difference, but no holder is completely impervious.

  • If it's picking up brownish orange spots especially around the letters it was often dipped improperly--If you send it to NGC for conservation they can redip/remove the residue and it should be OK. If there are active spots a PCGS dealer can send in a PCGS coin and have it stablized for the cost of the holder--but they have to write a letter. Welcome---image
