My wife surprised me yesterday.....

....with a coin and her coin knowledge.

We were out getting morning coffee and she gets a handfull of change back. She doesn't usually look through her change like I do, it just goes into her change tray. But yesterday something shiny caught her eye. She picks up a shiny 1976 dime and says to me, wow this is really shiny, you should check it out I think it is a proof. As I was examining the coin I an not sure if I was more surprised that the coin she had just handed me was in fact a proof or that she had noticed it and identified it as such. She was pretty impressed with herself. I will say she is pretty supportive of my coin habbit. I usually show her my new coin purchases and she usually humors me and says something like "very nice, how much did that cost", and usually ends by calling me a coin geek. Anyone else's spouse ever surprise them with some coin knowlegde?

My wife knows I collect capped bust half dimes and shows her interest in my hobby by offering to buy me an 1833 LM-5/V-10 from time to time.

My wife doesn't know squat, doesn't want to know squat, and reminds me on a regular basis that she thinks coins are silly.

Then she asks me if I have any more money to deposit in the account. She never corelates the two.

When my wife and I went to a flea market one time, she found a coin in a dealer's junk box saying that it looked like a Capped Bust large cent and for only a dollar she said I should get it. I ended up submitting it to PCGS and it came back as a 1795 large cent in PO-01 condition.

  • She's alright, I think I'll keep her for a while. image
  • My girl tries to humor me as well. She also uses the term "coin geek." She does, from time to time, ask a string of well thought out and genuine questions and makes an obvious effort to actually learn from what I tell and show to her. She's a hip lady.
