Some dealers are just true pices of work........

I'm at a local show today and I'm passing a table. The dealer is looking at a guy's NGC slabbed WL half and he's going on and on and on....about, "oh this grade is way off, this is obviously a weakened die state, this may be hairlines, and I think it's AU53 at best." The coin is slabbed MS64. That's one hell of a difference.
Later, I'm walking by the same dealer and he's hassling a lady who wants to buy a coin but they can't settle on a price. It was a Franklin half, again NGC slabbed that he had for sale. She's got her grey sheet and she's saying ask is $150. He wants $250, because........."greysheet doesn't mean crap.....I deal in real market values"......blah, blah, blah.............and of course, in his "opinion" the coin is at least a point or 2 undergraded.

Needless to say, the seller never sold his coin to the dealer and the buyer never bought the dealers coin. What an a$$.
Everything I write is my opinion.

Looking for alot of crap.

Travers had some great things to say about negotiation and coins. Slabs just put a crimp in some people's style. Not to say their aren't high-end, low-end and mistakes, of course - but not 11 points usually.

Oh this is just a wonderful story ... isn't it? Seems like TPG's haven't changed a darned thing from the good old days.

But this is still a free country. A Dealer can attempt to buy or sell on his terms, likewise a customer can do the same.

No wonder I'm such a devoted customer of the US Mint.image
  • This is the norm.... I hear it at every show I go to... "Your coins are garbage.. mine are the best on the market"

    EXACTLY!

    Never will change.

Finding the edges is never pretty to watch. Market determinations are just plain ugly a lot of the time.

Reminds me of two other things you never want to watch being made -- the law and sausage!

It's like trying to pin down the meaning of "PQ"... whatever the dealer has to sell is PQ; if it belongs to anyone else then it's a P.O.S.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thats why I buy and sell on the internet. I can turn a half million dollars, without hearing a voice.

The guy offering the dealer the WL Half should have said "Yes, I know and I agree with you - this WL Half is a total piece of $hit. That's why I thought you would be interested in it!"

Insults through politeness - works every time!

this is just another example of why "collectors" shouldn't think of coins as investments, they should just buy what they like.

gosh, life sure would be sweet for dealers, wouldn't it........?

Sur? I don't think so. Check the British India section of the KM.

I have been told I am surly, if that counts...

Small local shows can have some of the worst dealers. I've never had a problem with a dealer talking down a NGC graded coin. Walkers are easy to grade and I would have a hard time believing NGC would grade an AU coin as MS64

Some of the funniest moments in my collecting life have been when I overheard some dealers talking to customers or among themselves.

The more I hear about and experience coin dealers, the more I understand why people get burned and leave the hobby. Too many sharks with too little ethics! image

There are idiots in every industry, and numismatics is no exception. If you dislike him then make him dead to you in your mind and never deal with him again.
