Does it deterr you if a dealer advertises he is an ANA member?

Most price list or periodicals selling coins advertise they are ANA members. They have really nice web sites and also publisize they are ANA members even major dealers. Does this change anyones opinion when buying a coin? Does it matter if he is an ANA member or not? Or,does it affect your decision in a negative way since anyone can join for $36 or so?

Being a member of the ANA isn't a foolproof symbol of integrity. The qualifications to be an ANA member dealer aren't exactly strict.

It doesn't matter to me in the least.

It means they support the greater hobby in at least some minimal way. I'd rather they were members than not, but it would hardly affect my buying decision.

    I'm with Conder on this.

Put all the abbreviations and letters you want behind your name, I really don't care if you're a member of the ANA, PNG, or even the NRA.

I see it as nothing more than an additional sales pitch.

is not the ANA the same org that people "take to task" over the years? Get banned and then 40 years later brought back in.

sounds like a bunch of old men slapping each others backs over lunch how swell they are.

There is some measure of protection available, as the ANA does expel members for improper conduct and practices.

It cannot possibly be a negative.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

The ANA kicked out the owner of Coast to Coast Coins for selling cleaned and overgraded coins. He no longer shows the ANA logo in his multipage adds in Coin World.

Maybe, maybe not. But an ANA Member/ Dealer has a Charter and a code of ethics he is SUPPOSED to adhere to facing expulsion as a consequence of conduct unbecoming that of an ANA Member/ Dealer.

In the case of one particular Dealer that had multiple complaints levied against him for such misconduct, he was eventually expelled from the ANA and yes he still advertises in a National Numismatic Periodical.

This reflects badly on said periodical for allowing him to continue to fleece the masses. This knowledge by the periodical therefore, in essence, makes THEM culpable and to some degree an accessory to Fraud. THEY do not enforce their own guidelines for advertising Uncirculated coins thereby rendering said "Policy" for doing so, totally useless.

So, to answer the question, NO, it does not deter me whatsoever but at least I know I have as a last resort, a governing body that can weigh evidence and perhaps be of value should a deal go wrong with a fellow ANA Member.

He was expelled for not responding to correspondance relating to the filed complaint. If he had responded he would probably still be an ANA member.

You are correct. The ANA received several complaints about him selling misrepresented coins (cleaned, overgraded, etc). He probably chose to not respond since he knew the charges were valid.

The more a dealer has to use letters to puff up their name

the more suspicious I begin to get. The really fine dealers have

a great word of mouth reputation.
