E-Bay Question Selling Counterfeit Coins

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
I listed two Counterfeit Seated Dollars and listed them as counterfeit in the title.

Go to my selling section and notice they were pulled by E-Bay with no e-mails or notification.

With all the counterfeit stuff on E-Bay some of which are labeled countereit, why would they pull something labeled as fake???

Seems like the honest guy gets burned, the scammer keeps selling.

Since these are counterfeits of U.S. money that is still legal tender, they are subject to confiscation by the Treasury Department. It is not legal to make or to pass a counterfeit a legal tender coin - even if the intent is honest. E Bay is strictly complying with the law.

But it is OK to sell a counterfeit coin and not call it counterfeit!

Never seen one of this classification pulled.

Again, honesty doesn't pay in America.

It's no wonder E-Bay is full of scammers.

  • Use the word "copy", "imitation", "replica", or "not genuine"........ Ebay has "bots" that search for the word counterfeit....

I have seen stuff sell as 'contemporary counterfeit'

it probably depends who is at eBay that day

counterfeits are on the list of things not legal to sell on eBay

along with bodyparts, live animals, etc...
  • The problem with the fakes, is you may sell it, and list it properly, but the next guy may not, and clip somebody good.
  • I think they either do random sweeps for "counterfeit" or someone specificly reported to them that you were selling counterfeits in violation of their rules. If you SAY it is counterfeit and they happen to look, they will pull it. If you don't say counterfeit they decide that they are not qualified to judge and let it continue. You just got unlucky. You could list it again and this time there may be no problem at all.

Counterfeit US coins are sold often, usually to serious collectors. Ebay is wrong in pulling your coins, but they are really only enforcing their own policy. Try listing again as the coins appear, then say something like "Not US mint made".

So let's understand E-Bay. Gold level Power Seller is honest and lists a counterfeit coin as such. They pull two listings and don't even bother to send an e-mail stating why.

I search for other counterfiet listings and find 10 or so listings labeled the exact same way as mine.

I then report them all. Three days later every one of the listing are still listed.

    What gives???

Is E-Bay as as screwed up as it appears??

That's what I was hoping for, then I got caught 8 years ago, when Ebay was in its infancy. A lot of scammers get caught, the trick is to not to rip people off so much that you could go to jail for it. I'm done with trying to scam coin collectors-- there's more than enough fresh meat non-collectors that you can take to the cleaners without having to risk jail time.

  • I think most scammers on ebay need to be aware that they could get themselves a 'louisville facial' if they sucker the wrong person. just my opinion though.
