Ok Since everyone here knows that I am just learning all this,, I gotta ask about this toning on coins !! What causes it?? I have seen some that I have gotten in change,, mostly pennies & a few dimes but didn`t think much of it till I saw it in this forum !! I just thought they were unusual looking !! I didn`t have a clue that people actually saved & collected them !! How does this affect the coin as far as collectability !! And how does condition play into it on a toned coin?? Of course I know that the coins should be in as good a condition as possible !! And what about date & mint?? Please enlighten me !!
Thanks all !! I read this forum regularly, and purchased the redbook and have learned much, but I realize that I still need to learn more !! That link was great and tells me a lot !! I looked up the Mercury dimes while I was there, since I will be selling a complete set, and the info was very helpful !! Thanks again !!
I've been collecting proof coinage 1936-1942 for many years and this is the nicest 67 I have ever seen or owned. Tough to photo because of the magenta and turquios coloring. Always reminds me of an Old Dutch Master painting.

Less than perfect storage methods.Though numerous ebayers purposely tone coins for the profit.

It makes them sell way high if you can get them in a top tier slab.
<< <i>And how does condition play into it on a toned coin?? >>
Most toned coins are,or should be,at least unc.
<< <i>And what about date & mint?? >>
I saw an average date MS63 Peace $ that would normally sell for $20-$40 go for $401 because it was in PCGS plastic and toned.
Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies.

Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."

Appreciate it! Has some chatter on the cheek that limited the grade to PCGS MS64. Still a great coin, and proof that I buy the coin and not the holder
