Lookout Shylock, here I come! (New camera IHC images inside)

Okay, just kidding.
Paul's images are mystical in nature, unattainable by us mere mortals, so I just use them as an ideal to strive for but not achieve.
One of the coins that has always been the most frustrating for me is the Indian Head Cent. I've never been able to get the detail crisp enough or the color accurate enough to even be moderately satisfied. (Of course I'm really never satisfied with any of my images, but that's probably a mental quirk).
One of the local dealers was nice enough to loan me a nice example to practice with, so here it is:

Assuming that the color is accurate, i'd say that is a pretty darn good pic!
The only reason that you are hard on yourself is that
you are tired of picking on the rest of us
I like your results from the new camera very much.

I saw you say something about compression on your coolpix. What is compression? What is the best setting of compression for taking pictures of coins?
I think when you're imaging a different coin you have Kennedy withdrawals.
<< <i>I saw you say something about compression on your coolpix. What is compression? >>
Compression is a technology that reduces file size at the expense of clarity and detail. The .jpg file format itself is a compressed format. Native, uncompressed image files are very large and unsuitable for web publication, but are used for print publication. The .tiff file format is the one most frequently used for uncompressed images.
Most digital cameras allow one to adjust the compression, and have multiple settings for doing so. I shoot my images in .jpg at the normal setting. Unedited file size ranges from 350k to 400k with dimensions of 1600x1200.

Congrats - nice pic. Why don't you mail it to 10 of us and we'll have a competition??

I think the dealer who loaned it to me might be more than a little antsy by the time the competition was over.

without luster. say a xf40 coin.

<< <i>Can you let us know EXACTLY how you did it? >>
I took about 8 zillion images.
These were shot with three GE Reveal 100 watt bulbs. Two overhead at the top of the coin about 18" high, and the third coming in from the left side about 7 o'clock and 12" high. Metering was set at Center Weight, and white balance was set using White Preset and a white card. All other settings were auto.

What I appreciate most is the color Russ, it's unlike any IH you've ever posted here. Capturing accurate red copper color is tough to do. Neither of us will get the detail a 5 mp Nikon can with its huge add-on lens. But the versitility of the 950/995 3.5 mp Nikons, along with their wonderful macro lens, makes them very coin photography friendly. And at a much better price than I once spent.
Just as important as the camera: what lights did you use?
Russ, That's simply a superb photo! Clearly you were a photographer limited by his equipment. You have to be careful, though. With too accurate a photo, the coins you sell/consign that are marginally graded won't go as high.
Take care..Mike
