What is the normal premium of bullion eagles over melt?

Excluding shipping.

For most, I see them at like $16, so about $6-10 over melt.
  • likely about 20% over on 50's or about 600 bucks ea.

Thanks - I meant raw, bullion value, not graded.

  • They are a terrible investment, from a bullion standpoint.

I have a few hundred, but only because they were offered to me at spot.

Gold Eagles are just the opposite. You pay a small % premium at purchase, but you will also get a premium at sale.

Go to Kitco's web site. They are one of the largest precious metals dealers and have one of the best web sites.

Kitco's probably my favorite tracking site, too.

Monex (monex.com) looks like they're quoting about $20.00 over spot for GAE's

A local bullion dealer offered me about the same for GAE's. I bought the Credit Suisse

    bars for $15/over instead.

  • OK, I guess it IS gold Eagles.

In that case, I can usually grab them for about $8 to $12 over spot locally. Less in quantity.

As far as the Credit Swisse bars, locally they go for spot to $5 over spot tops, depending on availablity.

Jewelers will generally pay at least $5 over spot for those as they are .999 fine and they get used in custom jewelry.

Kitco is NOT the place to buy PMs from, sorry.

My local dealer charges about $19 over his buy price which is at Kitco buy.
He gets a lot of business but I think the spreads are too high. I can buy Saints from him ok (lol)

  • Gold Americal Eagles from the current year carry a larger premium then back dated eagles. (personally i say buy the old stuff the current will be old in a year or less). currently 2005 1 oz American Eagles are running approximately $25 over spot price, up to maybe $30 depending where your local dealer is in the supply line. Back dated are currently about $18 to 22 over spot from what i have seen.

the premiums for other 1 oz gold varies but goes something like this:

    $30ish Pandas
    $25ish AME
    $18ish Maples
    $8ish Kugerands
$6ish Other off type foreign gold

those prices based on what major dealers in bullion are asking for for their gold that i have seen recently

I guess I'm lucky I live in Houston. Damn, those are some high premiums!!

K-Rands generally go for spot down here, I've even grabbed a few at $5 back of spot when a dealer was overstocked with them. Pandas do have the highest premium here as well, but it's closer to $18-$20.

I agree regarding Kitco and buying. I do find it a nice web resource for articles and current gold and silver quotes.

Sellers will get "over spot" whatever the local market will bear. If I drive to downtown L.A. I can do just about the same,

but between parking, the traffic hassle and the "street scene" I'd rather pay the suburban vig image

Oh absolutely! I'm there several times a day just to read the articles and get the news. It's great for pulling up old charts as well.

It's a super resource for study and learning.
