VAM Quiz - Eight 1921-D Morgan Dollars

I'm pretty sure I've attributed these eight 21-D's correctly. Let's see who can identify all 8 first. If you want a prize, I'll send you a brothel token.

    1A1 or 1A2 (not enough info) -- 3A
    ??? -- 1G
    1L -- 1I
    1V -- 1H

Can't figure out the third one for the life of me. Can I have 7/8ths of the token?..Mike

That'a pretty impressive Mike! I won't tell you how long it took me.
...and you can only get 6/8th's with those guesses.

    Shame on you. image
  • image Didn't I just see this on another thread a llittle while ago.

Seems the owner was either going to put it on the BST forum or stick it on eBay. image

I remember it was an R-7 coin though. image

May have to do a little more research...

That coin is on its way to a new owner (a board member) tomorrow morning. I just thought I'd post it one more time for kicks.

Yup, but I made sure the same VAMs were on one or more websites. I wanted to play fair.

<< <i>The one with the dot next to the wing is a VAM-3A. >>

Yup again. Mike guessed 6 out of 8. Not sure how I can send him 6/8ths of a brothel token. I suppose I could scrape some of the sticky goo off.

You still have a chance. Nobody has guessed them all yet (Jack is just keeping quiet). Even if there's a tie, I have more brothel tokens!

YES!! Send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a brothel token!

I need some clarification from Rob though.
    I know the 1AB is now a 1A1. Close enough. I'm confused about the 1BD. What's the difference between a 1BD and 1BG? The 1BD doesn't exist anymore?

Exactly. That's what has me confused. Check the 1BG on Rob's site.

image Maybe a listing error at Ashmore??

Is the obverse the same as robs site??

Maybe the reverse was used on a different obverse at some point in time.

but the description on the text page is right. Later die state or a minor error on one of the sites? You'll get your sticky token either way! image

    My revised answer:

1-VAM-1A1 if the S is there, 1A2 if not.
    2-VAM-3A
    3-VAM-1BD
    4-VAM-1G
    5-VAM-2B
    6-VAM-1I
    7-VAM-1V
    8-VAM-1H

I was under the impression that 1AB is now 1A1. Is this wrong? image

I was also under the impression that 1A1 and 1A2 only differ by the presence of S in trust. Is this wrong? image

    Someone please educate me.

    Take care...Mike

Yes. That's correct from what I understand.

Mike, you and MAD4MORGANS were the only two that played. Send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a brothel token too.

There's some conflicting information on Rob's website. At the top of the page it indicates the 1AB is now changed to 1A1. However farther down the page it still shows the 1AB with the die scratch.

However, I think you sniped me on a technicality and you should win.

I think Norm (and Rob), should send us each half of the coins we had to try to identify...don't you agree?? image

I think the VAM Update is the autoritative source of VAM numbers, and Rob's site basically mirrored VanAllen's numbering with the exception that Rob's site had the JOH varieties not recognized as VAMs.

According to the 2004 VAM update:

    1AB (Eliminated, became 1A1)

    It also says the following:

    1A1 IV 1 · D2a (Pierced Tail Feather Die Scratch) (189) I-2 R-5
Reverse D2a– Long horizontal die scratch thru tail feathers between eagle’s legs. Some later die state specimens have a small die scratch thru od in God. (Formerly VAM 1AB)

    1A2 IV 1 · D2a (Trut, Pierced Tail Feather Die Scratch) (189) I-3 R-6
Reverse D2a– Die fill in s of Trust to form Trut.

Which is why I answered the way that I did.

If that's the "right" way to do it, I can't tell you, but hopefully someone will clue us all in (ahem, Rob?).

Still a bit confused, but one brothel token richer (Thanks Norm!!!)...Mike

  • Right click the image on the VAM-1AB and you'll see the file was created 12/1/2005 image

However, the March 2005 Hardcopy updates from Leroy indicate it is changed to VAM-1A1. So that should be the latest updates and the official determination.

Becuase you are more right than I am, you should get the nicer of the two tokens. image

And as usual...You guys get all the really cool coins image

    Yes, 1A1, and 1BD.

I'll email Rob...site typo's I think. Show us the brothel token!

I knew someone would beat me to the punch plus not wanting to make a fool of myself, I kept the playing to myself.

  • Hi Guys,
Yup, big mistake on my site in that 1BG page should be 1BD die scratch. Thanks for catching it!
Additionally, yes, 1AB is now 1A1. The date on the 1AB page reflects the reload after my web provider had a major crash. I lost of a lot of stuff (the ones with the broken links like VAM-1H). I'm way overdue for an overhaul to get those pages rebuilt and catch up with updates. Will fix these two tonight. The big overhaul won't happen for some time though. Just too many projects and not enough time! Kids, wife and work... coins... projects around the house! I'll keep plugging. Right now the job jar is full with the next VAMview article I owe Dennis H. Am also working on photgraphing my Top 100 VAMs for the registry set across the street (will also have to do my set over here properly but not until I get the vams on the labels... submitting a group next week at B'more). Will post a link once the registry photos are complete.

Regards and thanks for the help!
