Should someone with a passing (but growing) interest in coppers join the Early American Coppers Club

I have an interest in copper coins (mainly half cents and large cents), and right now it is a passing interest, but these series seem to be very interesting. I also heard that once you start on early coppers, you get sucked into a vortex, and your other collecting interests tend to go out the window. For someone like me (at this point), does it make sense to join the EAC? Also, I've never seen a copy of their club publication, Penny-Wise, so I am not sure what kinds of articles it contains. Does it just contain painfully detailed articles, like counting denticles on coins, or are there other types of articles? Any insight would be appreciated. The cost of membership seems pretty reasonable.

  • I wouldn't say they are "painfully detailed" but many of the articles are written on a level that assumes more than just a basic knowledge of copper, and it will be helpful if you are a beginner to have a copy of the standard references with you so you will know what variety they are discussing in the articles. I'm not sure if it is right for someone with just a "passing interest" but as you said the cost in not a big risk.

Yes, for $25 bucks you get six well written, informational news letters by some greatly knowledgeable copper folks. I highly recommend.

I'd recommend joining. I've been a member for a few years now, and I still collect all kinds of coins, not just old US coppers. They are addictive, however image

Is that a rhetorical question? Of course you should join. You can't beat the value with respect to numismatic knowledge.
