I believe that this coin was struck from regular dies. How do you tell it's a pattern, then? Is it because the coin is medal-turn, rather than coin-turn?

Yes, it is regular proof dies, but struck in bronze. Here is what I put on my web site:

has vivid magenta and lavender toning on both sides and is essentially flawless. As a pattern, this issue is highly coveted as a transitional
piece being struck in bronze from the regular dies. These were struck to motivate Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase into action on the coinage bill which would eliminate the copper-nickel in the cent, authorize a Two-Cent piece and stop the issuance of private Civil War tokens. It worked.

I believe the J229s were bronzed, thus contributing to the color. Most have the metal turn.
