2005 P Bison Doubled Die Obverse (DDO)

I finally got my first real DDO find. I found this recently discovered DDO variety in a 6 coin Westward Journey Nickel Series set that I just got from the mint last Friday (November 25). I saw one of these sell on eBay yesterday and using his photos as a reference, I found one occurance in the 3 sets I just received. The photos below are via a scanner and a photo through a microscope lens.

The doubling is most obvious in the "RUS" of TRUST, the "E" of WE and in the top tip of the "2" in 2005. There are hints of doubling elsewhere, but nothing major. The Satin Finish makes this DDO nearly impossible to see, scan, or photograph. There is just no contrast or sharp edges. The only way I was able to figure out for sure that this was a DDO was with a microscope. The listing on ebay was a 6 coin Westward Journey Nickel Series set, too; and it sold for $511. He mentioned a Coin World article on November 7th that describes this DDO and how rare they appear to be. But my guess is that 1) the mint is still shipping them so more will show up and 2) most people will not see it even if they have it.
SO -- it is a cool find -- not a 1955 Lincoln Cent DDO, but having one of the few known DDO's in the 2005 Bison nickel is good enough for me.

I'm thinking of sending this coin to an expert (e.g. nickelvarieties.com) or to have it slabbed. I'd like to find out if it is a true doubled die or some other process. It does not look like machine doubling - I'm hoping it is a true DDO. Any suggestions as to how I should go about finding out (slab via a coin service, send to nickelvarieties.com, or what)?

Here is one more photo I took (through a microscope) that shows the part where the "2" in 2005 appears to have some doubling.

I think not.

I'd give you the world, just because...
Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."

I think not.

I can see it with a magnifying glass (barely) -- I just could not photograph it. That said - I would tend to side with you on this, as I have not really been into error coin collecting. As I said in the first post, it is no 1955 Lincoln DDO, but from what I understand, extreem doubling like that is supposted to be a thing of the past after going to a new die creation process in the late 1990's. So if this is a DDO -- ever so slightly -- I'm sure that variety hunters will like it -- even if it takes a microsocpe to see it.

Here is what he had to say about it...

Hi Kenneth,
Your 2005-P Bison 5c (Satin Finish type) arrived safe and sound this afternoon.
I have conducted an examination of your coin with the following analysis:
(1) 2005-P Bison 5c Possible DDO?: Your coin is definitely a doubled die obverse. It appears to be of a Class II type in conjunction with probably a Class VIII tilted hub doubling. Distinct notching and separation lines can be seen on the lower portions of the letters of GOD, "E" of WE, letters "RUS" of TRUST, some letters of LIBERTY, lightly on the "P" mint mark, and date digits and both designer's initials.
Congratulations on your find and your coin will be assigned in my Crawford "C" Files as 2005-P 5c Bison CDDO-001. I will be taking photos this weekend and will have your coin shipped back to you via USPS Insured mail this coming Monday.
I will include an official signed letter from me with the package. Again -- congrats on a nice find. If you have any questions -- please don't hesitate to ask. I should have no problems taking photos and will send a copy of them to you via e-mail attachment when completed if that's alright with you.
Regards,
Billy G. Crawford

I'll post the photos he will be taking when I get them.
Now I'm wondering if I should order another dozen more Westward Journey Nickel sets from the mint to see if I can find another?

Yeah, now we'll see a run on these sets for people hoping to find their DDO lottery ticket.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to buy a few hundred and return the ones that aren't DDO.
<< <i>There is no WAY I am going through my 1000 count bag again... I guess they will sit there till the price is too high not to search them lol >>
You don't need to bother searching your mint bag for this DDO. They are from Satin Finish dies. The ones that I know of have only been found in the Westward Journey Nickel sets. They might turn up in mint sets, too; but only time will tell.
