Are there rules surrounding canceling an Ebay auction?

I bid in an auction on Ebay, and the item was of relatively low value. There were a few days to go with this auction, and in my opinion, this auction was flying under the radar and I was going to get the item for a song.

Then last night I got an email from the seller which stated something like, "I need to cancel the auction because I will be traveling for work and if you win, I don't want you to have to wait for a week or two for delivery of the item when I finally return home from my trip. Sorry for any inconvenience."

Are there rules surrrounding when you can cancel an auction? I am not saying that I doubt this seller is traveling, but it seems like an odd excuse. If I won the auction, couldn't the seller just email me and tell me that delivery will be in a week or so? Or, could he have sent me an email asking if I minded waiting for a week or two for delivery if I ended up winning? What do you think?

I can't speak as to the rules, but I don't think there is any recourse unless the guy had a history of doing this. It was kind of a silly thing to do, but I have had the experience of a relatively expensive item hanging out at a low price for 6 days, then jumping 400% in price the last day of the auction, it was kind of bad watching it languish for those 6 days
  • Sellers can cancel at any time, for any reason they choose.

  • I have had sellers try to back out of an auction with lame excuses like this. My guess is the final bid wasn't as high as he wanted, or the auction wasn't looking like it was going to get as high as he wanted, so he wants to cancel. You can't really force him to sell, but you can file a NPS (non-performing seller) report on him with ebay.

    Happens everyday !

  • My own opinion is it is O.K. to end an auction early if there are no bidders.
I have been asked to do this and have obliged but have refused if the items
    had even 1 bid.
  • It is accepted practice. Many sellers offer a coin in more than one venue at once and if it sells in their shop (for example) they will cancel their eBay auction.

the auction has to run it's course to completion in order to file nps doesn't it?

  • You can cancel any auction that has 12 or more hours left to run. Under 12 hours, the auction cannot be stopped. If cancellations become excessive, Ebay may consider it to be fee circumvention, and slap you on the wrist.
