1982 cameo penny PR70

Hi, if anyone can help me that I would appreciate it so much.
I recently purchased a 1982 PR70 penny at an auction. They have the book value on it at $1500. I can't find anything on it in any of the research I looked through. I don't know much on coin collecting. I was hoping someone out there can help me figure out what its worth.
I'm not sure if it has a flaw either. PLEASE HELP!!

Email me at scramer@treb.com if you have any info.

thank you in advance!!!

Sherri

Graded by which grading company would be my first question ?
How much did you pay would be my second ?
    What auction ?
Who listed it worth 1500 ?
If you don't know anything about collecting, what prompted you to make such a purchase ?

Just curious, Sherri. Was the price too good to be true ? image

What service is it certified by?

    (Please don't say SGS...)

I hope I'm wrong, but in my experience new posters who ask for email replies don't come back to their threads. Clearly there's not enough information to help the poster.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I was curious as to what it was worth. That was the only reason I purchased. I wanted to try and learn more about collecting. Thats all
It was from the Professional Grading Service or something to that effect. Its all incased, with a printed label insert. I big mintage number. ( what does that mean )
I paid only $10 for it from a local auction that I've been going to for months... usually estate things.

    What do you think?
  • Thank you!! I hope so too!! I didn't pay much at all though.
  • I don't think it really would grade PR 70. It might be worth $10 but it might be worth $5 or $15. The book value of $1,500 would still be too much even for a real PR 70 DCAM.

edited to add: Not all grading services grade to the same standards.

Professional Grading Service is not the same as Professional Coin Grading Services.

Hope you stay around and learn, Sherri. See Kranky's sigline.image
  • What if it it was Professional Coin Grading Services? The writing on the back was not written by the auction company, so it came
from the original owner with that price quote. How would I know if it had a flaw in it? It has a defect in the copper it seems on the back.

Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS) is one of the more reputable services, the others are Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and others, ANACS.

Professional Grading Service is probably worthless. Just my opinion.
  • Well alright then. :-) His name sure does seem to fit. Good advise though. My theory is you win some you lose some.. I only spent $10 so its not like I will be out much, but I would still like to know what its worth since I can't find any info on it.image
  • WHAT DOES IT STATE ON THE LABEL...EXACTLY?image Gotta know!

I'm glad you did come back to elaborate. Like others have said, we'd be able to better discuss it if we knew exactly what was on the label - if you can post a photo, that would be great. Or, if you can post a link to another ebay auction that has the same exact type of holder and label that would be good enough.

I'm just guessing here, does your coin's holder and label look like this one, or this one or maybe this one?

  • Kranky, It looks a lot like the first link you sent over. What does that mean?
Thanks everyone for your help! I have it at home, but I can bring it in tomorrow with more of the details.
