A VAM 3 is set lower and completely filled like in this picture. The VAM 4 is set just where you have yours. Due to wear, your date mark looks to have been "worn closed" and is typical of lower AU coins.
That is the B2c reverse that is found on the VAM-5. The micro D is positioned high near the top of the ray, as opposed to the position on the VAM-4. Obverse doubling, of you have some is commonly strike (aka machine aka shelf) doubling. However, it looks like the D on your image has the doubling consistent with the III2 obverse. Interesting.
My reference material, "The Official Guide To The TOP 50 Peace Dollar Varieties" by Dr. David Close, must have the wrong picture for the 1934-D VAM 4. I'm glad I didn't write that book.
<< <i>I'm looking at a VAM 3 in XF on a non-eBay site. What's the current value of this coin? >>
Don't see many in that grade, but I think 25-35 bucks for a problem-free one (hasn't really changed since the Oxman/Close guide) with the strike being the discriminating factor. If the obverse doubling is clear and satisfactory, it might be worth the higher end of that small scale. The premium is in the VAM-4 as you probably know.
Thanks. The seller is asking $22.99 + S&H, and has it listed as XF/AU. The doubling is VERY obvious.
My kids' Christmas lists are bigger than my wallet this year, and Santa isn't going to buy everything. Here's the link if anyone wants the coin. It's on the last page... item #40073. They take PayPal. Have bought from them before without any problems.
this is why I don't think I could collect VAM's.....

It's always difficult from photos. Not with the coin in hand. Experts disagreeing though....part of every field. How many experts thought your last 65 should have been 66? Part of the game.

The more valuable VAM 4 has a smaller mint mark which is set lower.

A real VAM 4 has the micro I D mint mark set in the normal position, which is much lower.
