Is it stubborn PVC?

I've had some stuff that I haven't looked at in 20 years. Some of it was bought in PVC holders in 1978-81 time frame. I have discovered slime starting on the rims on Unc 70-D Kennedys, and it came right off with acetone followed by a dip in 92% alcohol.

I had some low value 2 cent pieces, and it came right off with no changes other than the green stuff being gone to the coin visible under 8 power hand magnifier.

I am having trouble with an 1807 bust half. Nice piece, VG - Fine or so. It had green slime starting at the letters and high points of Liberty's neck, and almost all of it came off on the first bath in acetone. I changed out the acetone, and bathed again for 2 hours, then again. I still can see some green next to the reverse stars, and inside some of the letters. So far, no damage noted to the metal. I'm using a 3rd bath of new acetone tonight.

Should I just be patient and let it bath for a few days, or try to puch the stuff off with a q-tip or cotton ball? Or, should I try kerosene or Koinsolv?

I think the acetone should kill the active PVC pretty quickly. Maybe you just have a lot of crud built up on your Bustie.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Do NOT use a q-tip or cotton ball. If you must use anything, use a rose thorn. Be advised that if your piece is toned that it will not be once the stuff is removed from around the details. -Dan
