Yes it appears you have done some good work detecting a fraud.
seems I was always bidding against them when I was searching for my 16-D.
<< <i>THE COIN WAS GRADED AND SLABBED BY THE LONG TIME DEALER IN LOCAL COIN STORE (40+ YEARS). HE IS RETIRING AND SELLING OFF ALL HIS COINS. >>
That story seems strangely familar.

Had to add a little untruth to the listing and pad the grade to make the 250.00(if it sells that is)
Maybe it's this one.

<< <i>Retired dealer, my ass. You bought the coin here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41091&item=8351072738, and then bought the holder here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=531&item=8338275277 You are a scumbag. >>
Sometimes I just can't help myself.

Bolle, you should stick your head in on the Metal Detecting Forum some time and say "hi". I'm not there as often these days, but some of the folks there find some cool stuff, and would be interested in seeing your ghost towning finds. I hunt old plantation sites here in SE Coastal GA and sometimes find colonial-era stuff.
I have been reading the MD boards a lot lately. Would like to post some pics but they seem to come out kinda big. Still working on it though. Thanks.

<< <i>Hi! I'm reporting you to Ebay Fraud Department. If what you are doing isn't outright illegal, it is certainly immoral as well as blatant misrepresentation...

It's a bit blatant of a lie, but not really a scam.
<< <i>Meh, it's not that bad. He's full of crap with his description but I wouldn't believe "old-time collection" or "retired dealer" or "newly discovered hoard" or "unsearched" in any auction, and I am pretty sure most of you wouldn't either. Those terms are used so often to increase the value of a coin as to have almost no meaning as far as increasing saleability. It's a bit blatant of a lie, but not really a scam. >>
I don't know what the description was before but "NOW" the seller shows a coin he admittedly graded himself. He is asking $250 more than what he paid for the coin and has indicated a grade that is higher than the original PCI grade.
I don't see anything wrong with the way things are NOW.
I would never buy a high level coin such as a 1916-D Mercury Dime for $1,000 which was not in a primary (PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG) holder. Besides the issue of possible counterfeiting, I don't think that selling such a coin would be easy unless I would accept to lose a lot.
The catch words are "Buyer Beware" and "Buyer Be Smart"
It's a good thing that we have this forum to bring these things to the attention of those that will listen.
Unfortunately there are a lot of people around that would be tempted to buy anything if they get the idea that it is a "steal".

Bought This as ANACS Genuine damaged (no grade) for $1,450.00,
And is selling This (in his own holder) as an EF 40 for a minimum $1,800.00 and BIN of $2,600.00.

<< <i>Whether or not he is inflating the grade, doesn't anybody see a problem with him removing the coin to prevent people from knowing about the "surface damage"? >>
I do see a problem. That is why I would only buy a 1916-D graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG. The fact that this guy seems to like to promote 1916-D Mercuries does not make him an expert. The fact that he breaks out problem coins from recognized TPG companies using his own holders is really not a good sign. But you can't blame him for anything. The coin is his and coins in slabs are not reserved property.
Buyer beware, buyer be smart is about all you can say.
If somebody gets burned by this guy they will only have themselves to blame. Buying a $1000 plus coin is not a game. Not even buying a $20 coin is a game. But if people spend their money so carelessly is an eventual "crook" (I am not implying that this specific EBay seller is a crook) to blame if he takes advantage?
Naiveness has never been an excuse for anything.

He also revised the description in that listing. It had the same BS about the grade being from a retired dealer of 40 years who was selling off his coins.

As I think about this longer, his actions are excretory... Immoral... Unforgiveable...
But it's his property and his "reputation" - if he doesn't care...
At least if someone does their due diligence, his actions are transparent.
Sleazeball.
