Pretty good.. I mean bad.. err worn.

Can you still tell the date on it?

no, the date is missing, but it is a Heraldic Eagle so we are looking at a 1798-1803, but maybe its an 1804! (Or not) image

Not really... date has to be discernable, otherwise it's just a silver slug image

I think you should use "nic-a-date" to see which year it was minted. image

I love the coin, by the way. That coin has history to it. Wouldn't it be nice to hear the things that coin could tell us?

Nic-a-date doesn't work on silver otherwise there would be a lot of collectors using it on dateless SLQ's.
Interesting how the "A" on the reverse is still legible while everything else is gone.

Question for the expert slabbers: If the date can be determined from some die variety unique to a particular year - say you can tell from the "A" on the reverse - then the date could be determined. Would it get salbbed as a "PO1"?image

That is interesting? Pretty worn, but you can still tell it's a Bust Dollar.

The shadow of the bust is still present in the correct lighting, you can see it a little from the scans. Otherwise I am very intrigued by this coin, there is a lot of history on this one!!

The 'A' is the most visible feature but if you also look at the reverse scan you can see the faint outline of a couple of clouds on the left part of the wing.

Yes! Something along the lines of, "Get your grubby little hands off of me! Can't you see I'm all worn out?!"

Very cool.................I've been waiting for a post like this......not because I have a more worn Bust $1 but because I have what may be the most worn and still identifiable Morgan $1 - here it is (BTW, I've oriented it the right way, can you see why its a Morgan?):

    imageimage

If yo can't see it, don't worry. In the next picture, I've circled the two places on the obverse where details are clearly visible. If you held the coin next to a fully detailed Morgan, you'd see they match. Jst a little more wear and this one would be totally gone!

You know, the reverse "A" is very wierd. I don't know the series all that well, but it almost looks like an "A over C" or possibly a big die break through the bases of the A. If so, I think it might be possible for an expert to actually attribute this coin and potentially slab it. Would be interesting to see if there are any resident bust dollar experts around here who might have an idea about your coin's ID.

Perfectly clear to me - it's a circulated 1895 Proof Morgan! Send it in for slabbing!image
