1878-S Rare VAM for your enjoyment

Here's a coin I've been trying to find for at least 6 months and she's left me after only a few days. She already found a new home but I thought I'd share her with some of the VAM lovers here as this may be the only chance you get to see one in this high of a grade. This variety also happens to be one of the few coins featured in the soon to be released clashed die variety book by Dr. Mark Kimpton. (scheduled for release at FUN in January).

Enjoy...

VamGuy: What is so special about this particular VAM??

I see that the "7" in the date has a tail below it, and perhaps some clashed die evidence on the reverse photomicrographs... but nothing that appears very obvious... image

17A I assume. Denticle impressions below OLL.

Is that a clashed E reverse? It's not mentioned by Leroy.

Edited: Nevermind, he calls those denticles as well. Hmmmm

Stuart, it's a 17A as Jack has pointed out.

    17A(revised) II 13 · B2d (Doubled D, Denticle Impressions) (184) I-4 R-6 SUPER CD
Obverse II 13– 7 has raised slanted dash at very bottom.
Reverse B2d– Slightly raised denticle impressions thru OLL in DOLLAR, below OL and four slanted impressions below left tail feathers.

    Jack,

I wrote to Leroy via e-mail and included these images, and the one below, because I was dead sure those were clashed letters BE of LIBERTY below those tailfeathers. Leroy disagreed, and there's no point in arguing. Both the obverse and reverse dies are heavily polished and I'm still convinced that those marks are the remainder of the letters.

VamGuy and Jack: Is the tail under the "7" in the date also a diagnostic for this VAM variety??

Yes, the two major obverse diagnostics are the obviously overpolished die resulting in the missing hair above the date, and the die chip below the 7.
  • Nice coin... Did you pay your house note with that one.... image

Actually, I stiffed myself on the sale of that coin. It went to a regular customer at a low price. But he's a great guy and really deserves this coin so I'm happy to let him take care of her. I'm only hoping that I'm lucky enough to find another. image

If you have the clashing tool (and Leroy does), you can see if the wreath clash marks line up with letters BE under the tail feathers. If they
do, I'd be highly suspicious in calling them denticles. If they didn't line up, I can understand Leroy's opinion.

They could be either from the photos, but I'd want the front of that B there to be certain.
