man, the above guess about it being a proof really threw me.
i have no idea but those surfaces are wicked clean.

i am going to go with MS67. business strike that went from the mint to special hands.

edited to add: are the rims as clean as the pics might make you assume?

a slight pick would be the middle numeral I on the reverse. oh so slightly dented in the past.

fine. you beat a ms68 out of me.

one has to actually scan the coins surfaces actively looking for faults.
you basically fail to get past 2-3 noticeable marks. everything beyond
that.. ? does the bump in the middle numeral automagically make it less than 68?

No, they are not that clean -- I cropped the coin's edges where the slab overlapped them and more so on the reverse.

HINT:The coin is in NGC plastic.

one of the cleanest most eye appealling at least gem proof if not higher three cent nicks i have ever seen

    superb truly superb

10 out of ten for eye appeal

10 out of ten for surface quailty

10 for ten in grade definately above proof 65

and slight cameo and also nice original coloration ten out of ten

and for value opportunity this is de bomb

also the 1885 is the key date for proofs in my oopinion from 1879 to 1889

how can you lose?? you cant

    i am in love

    i agree.

what did you pay or can't i ask that when moon money might have changed hands?

  • gorgeous coin, curious about the hair. Photography aside it looks a little weak. I was thinking 65/66 because of the visual weakness.

I thought a 6 at first glance, but the one picture looks MS and the other PR image

Knowing that a lot of these 19th century uncs come PL, I'll guess MS66.

Congratulations to Ziggy for getting it right first! image

    Here are my thoughts:

The coin is a proof, no doubt.

The fields are highly mirrored, and there is some contrast with the devices.

There are three toning specs on the coin. Two are on the obverse. One is above O in OF. Another is just above Liberty's hair bun below and right of F in OF. The single reverse spot is at 9:30 and is just left of the end of a leaf. None jump out at you with the coin in hand.

There are a few contact marks on the coin that are consistent with the grade. The cheek, highest point of the curl near the nape of Liberty's neck, and on the reverse on the central roman numberal all show contact marks. There is also a miniscule pinhole below liberty's ear that looks as-struck to my eye.

As some pointed out, and the reason I belive some mistook it for an MS coin, was the weakness of the hair on the top of Liberty's head. This is the limiting factor in the grading of this coin, and why it is not graded higher.

    All this IMHO, of course

It is a very striking coin in hand, and I am very thankful to both Mark Feld for providing the coin, and Michael for his wisdom and advice during the purchase...Mike
