Hot 50 Morgan List - Confused about one coin - UPDATED

I had an 1883-O VAM 22A slabbed by ANACS a couple of weeks ago (AU58). It has a clashed E reverse and clashed O obverse. I am using three different Hot 50 lists and none of them match.

An older SSDC list shows 83-O VAMs 22 and 36, an ANACS population report shows 36A and 22A, and the new PCGS registry only shows 36A. The population report is a year old, but shows only three coins (now 4?).

Is the 83-O VAM 22A a Hot 50 coin or not?

Yes. The VAM 22A and VAM 36A are both considered Hot 50, but they occuply the same spot in the checklist. The VAM 36A has some little die chips in Liberty's ear. The VAM 22A does not. 22A is rarer than 36A

No. Just "1883-O VAM-22A E REV".

I did not list "Hot 50" on the submission form. Maybe it was my fault. However, I failed to list "Top 100" on another coin, and they added it.

Ok. I did. Nice guy. Answered all of my questions and gave me some additional info.

No. The 22A is not part of the Hot 50 set. Only the 36A is a Hot 50 for the 1883-O Morgan. He mentioned the 22A is going to be included in Mark Kimpton's upcoming Super Clashed Die book. Also said it is MUCH rarer than the 36A.

I just got off the phone with Jeff Oxman (Hot 50 book author). He counts either the VAM 22A or the VAM 36A on the same line in the checklist for the Hot 50 in his registries. Since the VAM 36A is much more common than the 22A, it just so happens that everyone seems to have that slot filled with a VAM 36A. I'll be visitng him a week from tomorrow, and if he can find a 22A, we'll compare the reverses to see if there's conclusive evidence that they're the same. We'll also have to see if the obverses are different die states of the same coin. I hope this isn't the case, because that would confuse the numbering issue further.

PCGS's situation is a little different than ANACS's. While ANACS will attribute a coin as VAM 22A, PCGS will currently only list 36A, which means that there could eventually be VAM 22As in PCGS VAM 36A holders.

Geez. Interesting responses! Yes, John is a #1 guy in my book. I assume ANACS has seen very few
22A coins, so this in fact is a new question to them. My understanding is they will include Hot 50 or
Top 100 regardless of whether you ask or not, as long as you paid the vam fee.

You might also ask Jeff Oxman about the 1887-S VAM-4 Hot 50. There's another coin with the same Obverse, different reverse. 87-S VAM-11 I think....should be a Hot 50 as well.
