It might have a chance, I've seen worse in plastic.

  • Well, after all, it is a circulated coin (not new), so I think there is a good chance PCGS will grade it. I'd call it VF35.

edited to add: I sent an XF40 1879-CC with two rim dings (one slight and one moderate) to ANACS. I thought they'd net grade it, but they didn't; just got it back: XF40. I'm pleased; I bought it for VF30 money. It might have to go in for a cross attempt at PCGS!

Should grade 35/40 I would think

  • Pretty mean rim dent over PLURIBUS. I've seen some horrible examples in holders.

  • This particular scratch will not disqualify it, but the rim ding will. If not for the rim ding, it would grade XF45.

Take it to a body shop and have that dent pounded out first. Too bad for the hit, nice coin otherwise.

I agree with the previous comments:

    1. The mark on the face isn't a problem.
    2. The obverse rim ding is.
    3. Coin looks to be XF45.

PCGS really trys to put much better date coins in holders, and since much of the rim ding won't show I think they'll take a few points off and grade the coin XF40.
    When in doubt, don't.

I as well believe that it will holder, being a better date. Go ANACS if you just want it in plastic, in any holder the rim ding will make it harder to sell at the non-damage grade.

will it grade? No... it is a BB for cleaning and the rim.

I think it will grade if the cleaning doesn't look too bad with the coin in hand.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
