1880/79-O Morgan - DMPL or PL? 63 or 64?

Your comments on attached coin.

PCGS would not grade the coin for some unknow reason. NGC graded it a MS63 PL.

Great looking coin in person; lost some of the scan sharpness when I compressed the size of the file.

Great cameo look on the obverse. I'd like to see an obverse photo of jus the coin (not the holder) to show more of the detail at the same resolution, and also a reverse photo.

That's a tough coin in PL, especially with nice cameo contrast. It would be interesting to know why PCGS would not grade it.

I'd love to see some digital photos of that coin. It looks very high quality from the scans.

Without seeing the coin in person, if NGC PL'd it (not DMPL), then I'm assuming it's a PL with nice cameo contrast.

  • As bad as my computer skills are, my picture taking skills are even worse. I don't have any digital photos -- these were done via a scan of I did of the coin. Will try and have my wife take some pictures but may be a few days.
  • attached is a scan without slab - obverse only for now.

Now I can see some more detail on that pretty coin. Obverse appears 64-ish to me although I hate to try and grade coins from scanned images.

Because of the large price jump from 63-64-65 the grading services are extremely conservative at grading them.

Did your purchase that coin raw??

I was tempted to make a joke about your thread title- your questions are answered right on the slab- it's a 63, and it's pl. image
I usually don't hear about ngc pl's becoming pcgs dmpl's- or about ngc 63's becoming pcgs 64's...... and what do you mean, "PCGS would not grade the coin"? Do you mean, they wouldn't cross it at the same grade?

Also- I don't really see how it's possible to offer a definitive grade from a scan.........

  • coin was originally in a SEGS holder - MS64 DMPL grade. Sent it to PCGS 3 times and gave up. 1st time to cross at a min. of ms63 pl and last time at ??? (can't remember since it was 2-3 years ago.)

Scan does not distort quality of coin. Have shown it to a couple of the top dealers and they were impressed -- said it was PL quality in the 63-64 range.

The coin looks ALL there and then some as a 63PL.

Did you royally P.O. somebody at PCGS? That's the only thing I can think of to explain why they didn't cross it.
    When in doubt, don't.

A presidential review will tell you what you want to know from the one person whose opinion really counts.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • If you sent it in the SEGS holder it's like advertising "don't grade me--there's a problem". The coin looks fine and as you know is very scarce with pl surfaces. It's a $6000 plus coin in PCGS 64DMPL (I just sold one at Heritage), and retained a nice 63DMPL. The comparision of my two suggests that they both can have equal cheeks with equal distractions/abrasions. The 64DM coin got the higher grade (the cheeks ALWAYS have abrasions on 80-O's!!) because there was more lite foggy chatter on the mirrors. However there was a nicer Cameo on the 63 than the 64 so I was happier with the techincally lower graded coin. Because your's has a really nice Cameo as well as the overdate feature I'd be happy with the coin. Unless the cheek was "thumbed" or something, I see no reason PCGS won't eventually cross it-- but why bother?image

  • I am not surprised at all that this coin did not cross at 63PL. Unfortunately PCGS has different standards for different dates, and the 80-O (including this variety of it) is graded among the toughest. I have submitted several examples of this VAM for grading in the past, and I have experienced that fact firsthand. Too bad we can't cover up the dates on submitted coins - - just think how many 84-S's in AU58 would end up in mint state holders!!

OK, I know this to be 'true', and PCGS did that to me. My complaint:

Where in the &*$%# does price jumps come into grading? Eye appeal, surface preservation, luster, strike, and 'price jump'? What kind of bull is this?

Is not a MS63 Morgan dollar the same as any other MS63 Morgan (relatively)? And why not? Between 'Dealers', 'wannabes', and the grading services, ya'll really have it gamed against collectors. Bull.
