If Heritage sends you a coin that looks like it's got some PVC on it, what do you do?

I just received an MS66 FBL Franklin from Heritage (I won it in an Exclusively Internet Auction), and it's got at least four small spots - visible under 10x magnification - that look like PVC. Each spot has a dark green center surrounded by a lighter, greenish-brown area.

It's a pretty Franklin Half. I'd hate for the toning to be affected by a dipping procedure.

Any suggestions? Will Heritage do anything about it, or is it between me and PCGS?

Dan

  • All the way until I heard the coin was in a PCGS holder, I was going to say return the coin if you are not happy with the way it looks. They are usually pretty good about taking returns, unless the coin is certified. If the spots were not mentioned in the description, they still might take it back if they agree with your assessment. Give them a call. If you buy from them often enough, and seldom make complaints, I would say you will likely get your money back. Good luck.

Well, I bought a half dollar from Legend that developed PVC a year later. I sent it to PCGS and after 2 months of it sitting they made me a good offer on the guarantee.

But if you have the coin in the return period, return it with the note about PVC.

Send the coin back. No way you should accept an encapsulated coin with active PVC.

I just sent back a really neat special variety Classic Commem because it had active PVC, in an NGC holder.image

About three years ago I bid on one of there sealed bid auctions,
and won 6/7 roll's of BU 1943 cent's.They were ALL processed coins. And they refused to
    take them back..On a side note,I sent NGC 10 coins,and Pcgs 10 coins.Ngc
sent the coins back with a note(processed) ,no charge..NMS.

  • I appreciate the replies.

It sure is annoying when this happens... I love the coin (the toning is awesome!), but the PVC spoils it. I guess that's the risk of buying a coin at an auction.

I've e-mailed Heritage. Hopefully they will want to remedy the problem.

Also, I'd hate to think that the person auctioning the coin through Heritage knew about the PVC, but wanted to sell it to someone else anyway. Hopefully that's not the case.

Heritage tries to stick you for 10% on internet only auction returnss.

I won't participate for this reason.

Call Heritage tommorrow morning and discuss your dilemma with them. If all else fails, the coin can be submitted to PCGS for a PVC review.

I'm a little appalled that numismatic professionals are not able or willing to screen out a coin from their auction that has pvc- it's not very hard to identify, IF YOU LOOK AT THE FREAKIN' COIN......... image

Myqqy---It isn't always obvious. Sometimes its only a small spot in one of the coins recesses.

I am not their spokesperson, I just found it amusing that someone who claims to be a happy customer ( of any company) would turn around and post a negative article about that company that contains events from so long ago it's old news in the business.

I had posted this before, but the last 3 Mercury Dimes I bought from Heritage and 2 Peace Dollars, and 1 SLQ, all had very bad PVC on them. I stopped buying coins from Heritage because I'm now stuck with the coins and some I had to sell off at a loss. PCGS cleaned 2 of them, and on the others said "they were original" -- BS!!!image They just couldn't remove the PVC because it would probably lower the grade of the coin...and one of them was $3.5k, so they made up an excuse so they wouldn't have to buy it back.

The 2 that were cleaned -- the PVC grew right back and the coins now look worst then they did in the first place. Some of the coins I sold off for a loss image

I am now very jaded when I deal with auction houses (Heritage, specifically) and if the picture has ANY signs of would-be spotting, and anything else that doesn't look like ONLY toning, I simply pass...the auctions are a great way for people to liquidate their junk coins without having to offer any kind of refund (Heritage only offers refunds on their eBay auctions and I'm not aware of them offering refunds on their own auctions).
