Is there a grading service called PNGS?
I was looking at an advertisement in Coin World for a dealer who was selling a lot of "off brand" slabbed coins. There were several listings for PNGS coin. Is this a real grading service? I've never heard of them. I assumed that it was a typo, but this grading service was listed several times in the ad. I know that if someone advertises in CW everything is on the up and up
, but I was curious about this one.

The name is LEE!
PPGS already exists or existed, haven't seen any lately. It was listed in the book. Two different holder varieties
RCGS This is a currency grading service Rare Currency Grading Service. Three different varieties. First was listed in the book.
<< <i>My favorite is the PCGS in Peking! They specialize in strictly graded counterfeits! >>
I think you are joking, but there was an RCGS listed in the Miscellaneous section of the book that DID "slab" counterfeits. (And sold them as genuine.)
As for CCGS there have been four different companies using hose initials.
There is a highly respected dealer and collector in the area who swears by PNGS. He told me he saw a very nice Morgan in a PNGS holder a while back and was intrigued because it actually was undergraded. He consequently forwarded a few coins to them as a sort of tryout and said he was amazed when they came back very conservatively graded. He says he has since used PNGS as low-cost litmus test on where coins will go if submitted to PCGS and NGC. They are very good at picking up tough VAM varieties and difficult to discern overdates and so on. After the coins come back he cracks them out and either sells raw--with an accurate grade and satisfied customers--or forwards to PCGS or NGC.
This guy writes off as garbage all of TPGs not among the Big Three, but says he respects PNGS.

<< <i>Hold the phone, Mike. All of the close-minded guffawing is wrong. I'm surprised you even posed the question because it's only an opportunity for people to snort, posture and try to come off as knowledgeable. Amazing when they've never heard of the company, but typical I suppose.

Guy-- thanks for the information. It's great to hear of this person's first hand experience with the company. I've never heard of them before.

<< <i>The PNG is into Slabbing now? >>
Actually the PNG was doing certification years before PCGS or NGC came along. They used photocertificates, two different varieties
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
