I've always wondered why that particular VAM is so desirable. Anyone have an idea?

It's listed as an R-7 (Rarity Factor 7) in the VAM Encyclopedia and indicated as Extremely Rare (Few Tens). Higher grades would be even more scarce of those that exist.

It is also a TOP-100 coin and no TOP-100 coin collector could finish his collection without one.

Rich guys like one of the ones bidding on it now, would likely hoard them up and make them even more scarce and use it for a future investment.

With all respect to the R-7 number, I bet there are plenty of other VAMs in the same category.

I guess the Top-100 designation (kind of an artificial thing, if you ask me) carries a lot of weight.

I don't have one and I doubt I ever will. My perspective is that VAM 44s are expensive mainly because they were identified a long time ago as the VAM to own, so everyone wanted one. That tradition has held up in the face of more coins being found, and with PCGS now doing a Top 100 Registry set I expect all hell is going to break loose.

The 1878 VAM 44 has been called "The King of VAMs" since before the Top 100 was established. Yes, there are coins of which fewer are known. Some would be pounced upon like an injured gazelle that happened across a pride of hungry lions, like the 1878 VAM 14.12 and 14.17. Others don't have quite the following yet.

The new PCGS VAM number shows a total of 5 with this 61 being the finest. This pop report is all but a month old so you can expect this to increase substantially over the next year.

NGC Shows a total of 10.

The Oct. 04 ANACS pops shows a total of 9.
1-60, 3-62, 1-63, 1-61PL, 2-62PL, 1-61DMPL.

This PCGS MS61 just sold for $10,201.

Depends on which holder it's in. VAM 203 is a Top 100 coin, so folks will need it for Top 100 Registry sets. My estimate is somewhere in the $2500-$2750 range.
